A MAN had his debit card stolen from a Westcliff cashpoint machine, which was later used to steal cash from his bank account.
A 63-year-old man was using the ATM at HSBC in Hamlet Court Road in Westcliff around 11.25am on Wednesday, February 17, 2010.
He became distracted by two Asian men, one of whom tried to put something on the keypad area of the ATM and started talking to him, which caused confusion – before a second man told him the machine didn’t work. Once the two men had walked off the man noticed that his card was missing. It was later used to withdraw £600 from his account.
Pc Neil Monk said: “We’d urge people to be aware of their surroundings whilst using a cashpoint machine and ensure no-one is standing close behind you. If you think someone is watching what you’re doing, or if someone appears to be trying to distract you, you should end the transaction and immediately report it to bank staff.”
Police are keen to identify the pictured men and speak to them in relation to this Hamlet Court Road incident. If you know who they are, please contact Pc Monk on 0300 333 4444 or call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
