Camp Cuckoo campaigners move on

PROTESTERS on the Camp Cuckoo protest site have moved on after Southend Council was granted an eviction order at the High Court.

In a hearing at the High Court in the Strand, London, the council were given an order of possession to evict the campaigners.

Nine protesters turned up at the court carrying a picture of their cat which was named in the court papers.

The council have also been awarded limited costs.

The group packed up and left this afternoon.

It IS the protesters who have broken the law NOT Southend council so your logic is flawed.

By your logic I could come and pitch up a tent in your garden and have free rent for as long as I wanted to stay.

But the council don't "own" the land we the public do. HAve we been properly consulted about the scheme? I don't think so and even if we were the council wouldn't take a blind bit of notice.

Great news, it's time to stop this rag-tag band of local busybodies and outsider environmental protestors from claiming to speak for the town.

Why is it everytime this lot set up camp a cat seems to join.

Last time it was a "stray" what is it this time, if they took their own cat on to the site then in my view that amounts to animal cruelty.

'V' says...

Shame. Still, there are other methods of protest.

Also it will be good to start a campaign to expose the corruption of Anna Waite, and highlight her multiple conflicts of interest to Southend's voters.

DannyK86 says...
1:09pm Thu 18 Mar 10

Don't get me wrong, I don't really like Anna Waite and don't think she does herself any favours, but I'd rather see the scheme go ahead. I'm sure there has been extensive modelling of the traffic flows and if there is a demonstrable improvement, like shaving a couple of minutes off a journey, then it will be a good move.

wosres says...
1:17pm Thu 18 Mar 10

Pleased to see that the High Court has proven the protestors wrong that they do not have the right to be on the land and the council do have the right to evict the. So something that Mark Sharp was purporting to be truth was in fact just a lie. Doesn't give much credibility to anything else these campaigners say...

southendmechanic says...
1:21pm Thu 18 Mar 10

Oh no not limited costs that mean the cost incurred by any eviction, so if they dont move and it takes police bailiffs and private security firms to move them they WILL get the bill.
How will the cat pay???

Peter Pantsless says...

What the protesters need to do is suddenly all claim to be travellers and get a couple of the purple rinse brigade on the site and claim evicting them will kill them!

You must one of the blinkerd people who do not see the large volume of cars that pass through that part of SOuthend every day, keeping at cat so close to a busy road living out of a tent is cruel in my book.

As for the tent thing what are the huggers living out of, and do they own the land is it their names on the deeds of the land,

They are living in tents on land that they do not own its not got Mark whats his name or Peter dobedo's on the deeds for the land so they are not lawfully permitted to camp on it.

I hope they announce when the eviction starts want to go and watch take the camera and camcorder get some footage of the all blubbing as the trees come down.

The outcome of the court hearing is a real shame but peaceful legal protests will go on to do what can be done to stop the council from their shortsighted policies.

Time and again we have challenged the council over the need to reduce car use in order to comply with their own objectives of reducing congestion and CO2 emissions. The council have committed to the Nottingham Declaration to cut emissions by over 40% by 2020 but none of the supporters of car dependency can explain how the council can possibly achieve its aim.

Its a simple statement of fact - you cannot reduce emissions by encouraging greater car use. Those opposed to the road widening scheme want all available tranport funds to be put into real solutions that have been proven to work elsewhere. For example, we should eb encouraging more bus travel and cycling. The Netherlands has achieved a cycling rate of 23% of all journeys undertaken.

If the money spent on the Priory Crescent/Cuckoo Corner scheme was put into more cycle lanes, bus lanes, etc the council could actually achieve something worthwhile - reduced car use, reduced emissions, less congestion and the prospects of a more competitive country in which it is possible to move goods.

Those who support ever greater car use, know full well that this will lead to more congested roads and worsening employment position in the UK.

Time and again, those of us opposed to the council's policies have produced sophisticated, evidence based arguments to back up our cause. The Echo 5 Angry Old Men (AOM) only offer abuse and the most incredibly childish arguments. An example is the Playboy joke. It shows just how shallow they are.

One major reason why is because, there actually doing something and trying to make a change.. I garentee most people on here (including myself), If we have something to complain about or dont like something we all 'cant be bothered' to do anything about it.
And also, When your a child, your always told to stick up for your beliefs and to not be peer pressured etc... Well to me this sends out a signal of ' NO KIDS dont stick up for your beliefs and be passionate about anything thats not agreed with the council otherwise youl end up going to court about it'
And to all the people complaining about the protesters... when the roadworks start i garentee most of you will complain that there taking to long or causing disruption.

Stop bleating on about the Nottingham declaration, you're like a stuck record! People need to access East Southend regardless, there aren't really any alternatives which is why they use their cars. If anything, congestion and queueing creates MORE pollution.

The fact that the Council has "won" today with unlimited funds and legal advice behind them is no victory! It was an unwinnable battle because the protestors were given 3 days to prepare their defence and obviously didn't have the time or unlimited coffers for a fair fight! However, it is NOT an unwinnable war as it just proves to the town what we already know about Anna Waite and her Tory cabinet and public opposition will continue to grow against them until they are ultimately kicked out. The fact that they went in so hard and took a few random people out of a whole network of supporters to the High Court and have held them liable for costs when they know that they are just normal people with limited incomes and assets, just shows how rattled they are and how desperate they are to crush anyone who dares to speak up against them! They are trying to teach Joe Public a lesson not to mess with them but they will find that it will backfire because Joe Public has had enough of rolling over and being kicked. If they cut down those trees, they will face another public backlash like they did at Victoria Circus and with the elections coming up, they are moving ever closer to the precipice.

Now ignore all the tree huggers and carry on doing an excellent job.

Electric cars are next to useless. The pollution aspect with electric cars is horrendous. Where are all those millions of dead lithium-ion batteries going to go?
Electric cars are a knee-jerk reaction that has not been thought through. Production and disposal of the batteries is enormously polluting.
The cars themselves can only travel about 100 miles on a charge, and require eight hours to recharge. The electricity used to charge them comes from the national grid. So pollution from the exhaust pipe is simply being swapped for pollution at the power station.

Also what happens if you run out of charge during a journey? You can't take a can to an electric station and carry a gallon of electricity back to the car...

Oh and one last point, just how much faster is a traffic jam full of electric cars, than a traffic jam full of petrol/diesel cars?

Gingerfox is correct, the car as a viable transport option is in its death throes.

Precisely IF it works. There will still only be one lane into Prince Avenue. So it doesn't matter how many lanes Priory Crescent has, the bottleneck will still be there. Combined with pedestrian controlled traffic lights, there will be zero improvement in traffic flow.

Yesterday I took the car to work and decided to use Priory Crescent to see these 'horrific' delays southendmechanic keeps bleating about. I timed how long it took to get from Sutton Rd to Prince Avenue at 7.40am.

Six minutes.

That is hardly a massive delay. And definitely not worth destroying more of Southend's greenery for.

I believe Manners Way will be next and it will be turned into a duel-carriageway but try and get a straight answer out of the Council on that one! This council is quite clever, direct all the anti to Anna, then when she is voted off (again) they will put her into another safe seat (again)and carry on as if they had nothing to do with all the unpopular ideas coming forth. We really need a reduction of the Tory majority on this Council. And what about the plans for Victoria Avenue. The Heath building was perfect for conversion for the students. What a waste. I hope they do not think they can knock down the current Museum without a fight. Donated by Carnegie to the town. They got rid of the previous library easily. Those buildings are just the sort other towns are trying to keep. Even the old Echo Building would have made a super Museum for the Saxon King. No forward thinking. Knock down - spend money with no real improvement to the town. Instead of a Sainsbury's on Roots hall how about a nice new swimming pool, that's central. Or Ice Rink.

Yep. Agree with most of the supportive comments on here. Council has done a good jib and acted within the law and by the book and got the result that most people agree with.

Agree with comments about the improvements the town is getting. Good that cycle route is being extended along the seafront. Good to see work starting on the Prittlebrook cycleway. Soon we will be well catered for for cyclists (I am one) in what is a very densely populated area. When the Prittlebrook cycleway is complete you will be able to cycle from Priory Park to Belfairs Woods and thus out of the area without having to cycle on roads (except to cross them at properly designed crossings).

Good show Anna. Keep up the good work.

Sixteen mature trees destroyed, and Southend's green spaces reduced AGAIN, so idiots who are too stupid to time their journeys to take account of a minor hold up save three minutes getting to the next hold up a quarter of a mile down the road.

Perhaps they could take up domino's or crochet..... maybe even find time to meet a partner so they can expand their lonely lives beyond worrying about a few trees.
I jut hope the council hurry up with the road improvements so I can shave 2 mins off my journey to work. Don't worry treehuggers - I'm only thinking of the saving in carbon emissions from my 3.0 V6 :-)

LOL @ V's comment "I hope they haven't told the whole truth and widen the road into your front garden using compulsory purchase".

That comment just made my day!

I think they would pass on that option when they see that heap of rusting cars and junk on the front garden, I don’t think the council would have money in the budget for that job . He said he would cash it in down the scrap yard ASAP but doesn’t seem to have a working vehicle that’s got tax & insurance to get it there.

This might be the sad end result of the only sperm out of millions that made it though, but I just think the midwife had to choose what to throw away and the rest is history.

And also, When your a child, your always told to stick up for your beliefs and to not be peer pressured etc... Well to me this sends out a signal of ' NO KIDS dont stick up for your beliefs and be passionate about anything thats not agreed with the council otherwise youl end up going to court about it' And to all the people complaining about the protesters... when the roadworks start i garentee most of you will complain that there taking to long or causing disruption. Welcome to England everybody. this country is a complete shamballs
Do you not think that the junction rework is "to make a change" I am happy that the members of the council who we elected do believe that what they do is for the common good. If you feel that they do not represent us then stand for council make your stand in the chambers. What with the airport and junction issues in the town it will be interesting to see how many candidates groups like SAEN put up. I believe they have this very blinkered idea of how much support they actually have in the town , its nothing like the numbers they imagine and not one would get elected if they stood !!!!!!!!!!! But feel free to prove me wrong.
Camping by the side of the road costing us the tax payer money to have them removed is incorrect and undemocratic.

Ooooh er!! Let me guess? a treehugger.....?
Must be sad having no real life or interests... Don't forget to vote Lib Dem in May by the way - you can always attempt perfecting the "X" sign now as sounds like you'll need the practice. Hey! Idea! Join a club, get out more - eventually you'll meet people and improve on your sad and lonely existence.
Oh to live in a fantasy world where all you have to worry about is a few tree's! Fortunately I do my bit by having a nice open log fire ( and that's just in the en-suite) :-)

Max Impact, is your username thus because you think maximum impact on the environment is a good thing? Doesn't that actually make you a bit of a tosser. And I feel somewhat vindicated knowing that I work harder than SouthendMechanic ever does. Sad git spends all his time on echo message boards whinging and crying about how unfair protestors are and there I was thinking he was speaking for all the hard working people in Southend...

Why is that a stupid post? I think G-VJET was just comenting on us, as taxpayers having to pay for the eviction. I don't see any reason why he/she would not be part of the Vulcan.

And yes you have met me when you where at camp bling when you all moved in there and thought it was clever when we asked you to move to say the law was on your side guess what it wasnt this time ;-)

no they served southed just the same as all the other big names in the town.
The Garon family made their money by owning property and selling at times to suit themselves.
As did the Jones family they didnt make their money by thinking of everyone else and not of the family hence making the moeny they did which enabled gifts to the people of the town, some of which was in return for the help the council had given them.
Talza arcade was not only a property it was the family home, with many good features but at the end of its time it was tiered and new shopping centres were being asked for by the general public. The selling of it and other surrounding property enable regeneration of the area which has created many thousands of people with jobs over many years.
There is always a bigger picture one my grandfather and my own father were more than happy to veiw and getting sentamental about material things only causes you to stand still.
The selling of the arcades gave them chances to explore other ventures which have also created jobs for people.
History is a good teacher but where would southend be now if it had been left as it was? DEAD people would not have paid the prices in the small arcade shops and have gone outside of the town to the newly build basildon. With victoria avenue being left as housing non of the offices would have moved to southend and unemployment would have been very high with people forced to move to find work.
so hey i thank my greatgrand father and others who had vision and could move on and embrace change.

t a disappointment, bet they are turning in their graves... So far we have heard about your pikey lifestyle and family, how hard done by you are, how much your dad paid for the house, how much work you have (which I doubt because you are on here 24/7) etc etc.
