Smith ousted by Tories in South Basildon

DAVID Cameron's Conservatives have sensationally snatched the South Basildon and East Thurrock seat from Labour.

Tory candidate Stephen Metcalfe emerged victorious over Labour's Angela Smith.

Mr Metcalfe polled 19,624 and Mrs Smith polled 13,852.

The seat was always difficult for Mrs Smith to win because of boundary changes and Labour's poor showing in the polls.

The loss will be a personal tragedy for Mrs Smith, who has served as a close aid to Gordon Brown and a senior minister in the Cabinet Office.

Mrs Smith, who was born in Pitsea, was visibly upset when the votes were read out by returning officer Bala Mahendran.

Mrs Smith: "I've been very proud to have been the MP for Basildon and East Thurrock for 13 years. Tonight, we have loaned the seat to the Conservatives, but that is a short-term loan and we intend to take it back.

Mr Metcalfe said: "I'm thankful people have put their trust in me and I will be open and honest with them and demonstrate integrity in everythin I do."

Get your facts right Echo Angela Smith was born in Hackney East London, I have had constant contact with her over different matters over the concerns of this area and Thurrock in general she failed in everything, she let everyone down on the Dartford crossing which should have been free in 2002 instead it is now a nice little earner for the four companies that all but own it.

Angela Smith can now spend more time with her taxpayer purchased second home. Shed no tears for the parasite - she leaves parliament very wealthy from fleecing the taxpayer. As for 'loaning' the seat - you arrogant cow. The seat does not belong to you - it belongs to the taxpayer and we decide who is the temporary custodian.

If Labour had been doing a good job she wouldn't have lost her job(s). That's a simple and undeniable fact.
As soon as she admits this and sets the blame at her bosses feet, she'll be living a lie.

Both admirable and worthy causes but dont let the truth spoil an inane rant!

Lets get one thing straight about this country....WE got it in to debt because WE want to live above our means, and WE are too stupid to change our ways without a good kick up the backside. I hope the recession is a long, long way from being over, because WE need teaching a hard lesson. The lesson our fathers and forefathers learned a long, long time ago. Neither a borrower or a lender be!

So before you dimwits start throwing stones at others, look at yourselves and see what you could have changed!

What an ignorant lot of morons most of those who left comments are. Angela Smith may not have been perfect but she was a very good constiuency MP who helped her constituents. With regard to her expences mistakes then compared to John Baron who still hasnt explaned what he did with the 80k he got from re morgaging a property that he doesnt live in but claims is his second home, is nothing. Angela made a mistake which was missed by those who were employed to check the expences and when she found out she had made a mistake she paid money back. As far as I am concerned the real losers are the residents who now will no longer have Angela and her staff to turn to when they are in need of help. The new Tory MP wants to represent us so much that he has refused to move to the area. That says more about the man to me than anything else.

Pitseaboy get your facts right Angela has never been a Pitsea MP. John Baron who fleeced you out of 10s of thousands of pounds was the Pitsea MP. But it seems that this was ok as he has just been returned with an increased majority. It seems that the residents of Basildon and Billericay are happy to reward an MP who is completly dishonourable but then again he is a Tory so it is only to be expected.

You only here from MP's at election time and the only person who knocked at my door was Stephen Metcalfe, i didnt even know who else was running. Lets be honest they knock at our door when they want something and if you truly believe that they will make a great difference then i feel that is naive, It appears that there is a split over the former MP so lets give the guy a chance to see what he can do weather he lives in our area or not. It would be good if he did so he could see things first hand but at the end of the day its about seeing positive changes in the area.
