A PUB landlord heaped praise on his staff as he won a pub of the year award.
The Golden Lion, Rochford, was voted 2011 Pub of The Year by the South East Essex branch of the Campaign for Real Ale.
The branch has more than 800 members and the pub in North Street, Rochford, netted the most votes earlier this year.
Chuffed landlord John Harmon, 63, took over the pub in November 2009. He said: “We’ve been doing really well and I think it’s because everything that goes over the counter has to be top quality.
“If it’s a cheese roll or a pint of beer, if we’ve given the last pint in the barrel and it’s no good then we’ll give you something else and we’ll always do it with a smile.
“It’s a team award as my staff are great.”
Camra members Maggie Osborn, said: “Members love it because of the old-fashioned pub atmosphere, friendly welcome and high quality ales.”

Proper old style friendly pub with a great atmosphere and, above all, really great beer without too many frills.
Too few pubs like it.
