A DUTCH company will take over the running of Essex’s rail services, it has been confirmed.

Abellio Greater Anglia will replace National Express East Anglia from February.

Abellio was up against British firms Stagecoach and Go-Ahead Group in the battle for the Greater Anglia franchise, which includes routes between Colchester and London Liverpool Street, Southend Victoria and London Liverpool Street.

The franchise will be up for grabs again after two-and-a-half years when a firm will be awarded a 15-year contract.

Abellio has pledged to deliver a series of improvements, including better station and ticket facilities, a text messaging service to keep passengers informed of disruptions, 600 more car parking spaces, more cycle storage facilities and deep cleaning of stations and trains.
