Anger as South Essex Homes fails to fix flats' TV problems

Without TV service – the residents of Delaware Road, Shoebury Without TV service – the residents of Delaware Road, Shoebury

TELLY addicts were left staring at blank screens over Christmas and New Year when their satellite dish broke down.

Residents in two blocks of flats in Delaware Road, Shoebury, missed out the annual TV specials and endless repeats after the screens went blank two days before Christmas.

Landlord South Essex Homes was called to fix the problem, but the repairs failed twice.

Andrea Saunders, 44, who suffers from agoraphobia and rarely leaves her home, said: “The only thing I really have for entertainment is the television, so I have been a bit lost, especially as the best films are on over the Christmas period.

“We have got no guarantees that even if someone does come and look at it again it will get fixed.”

The problem was temporarily repaired when it was first reported, but the signal went again at 10.30am on Christmas morning.

A whole new system was then set up, but this broke down again just before 11pm on New Year’s Eve.

Father-of-four Stewart Chapman, 36, said the lack of television had particularly affected parents who were trying to keep their youngsters entertained during the school holidays.

He added: “Over the Christmas period the kids were stuck at home, so it was a bit of a nightmare.

“This has happened a few times since the new satellite dish was put up in the summer, and it’s a bit ridiculous it has gone on so long.

“If something is wrong, you expect your housing association to sort it.”

Residents from the 24 flats affected have now sent a letter of complaint to South Essex Homes, which is keen to stress it replaced several amplifiers and restored the system in an attempt to solve the intermittent fault.

Group manager Paul Longman said: “We are now investigating the supply cable as it is believed the fault may be caused by this.

“This is a very unusual fault and television services are normally restored the same day. However the intermittent fault has been very difficult to diagnose.

“South Essex Homes would like to apologise for the inconvenience caused and confirm the service will be restored as soon as possible.”

So as the rest of the country struggles with storms, power outages and flooding... Some people in Shoebury missed Eastenders on Christmas Day. Please allow me to present the world's smallest violin, playing just for you.

Maybe a positive spin could be put on this story..

'Couch potatoes were forced to speak to each other and some even ventured outside.
Children were happy that instead of hearing the misery of an Eastenders Christmas Special, their parents played some games with them.'

Stewart Chapman typical chav father - stick kids in front of tv. If you want to entertain the kids play games with them - interact with them - dont shove them in front of a tv.

Well, I'm not surprised to read the usual nasty comments about people who live in social housing....
However, reading the story, it mentions a satellite dish not a TV aerial, so I think that terresterial analogue & digital services were still available. Additionally most people have DVD players & can also watch a lot of TV via the internet, so not a total disaster.
As regards criticising parents for allowing their children to watch TV, what are you on? I was brought up in the 1970s, played outside & in, often played board & other games with my sister parents & grandparents, read books & listened to the radio as well as enjoying watching TV, alo of which was better than what we get fed nowadays. I personally don't recall my parents not talking to me & sister because there was a television in the house.
If it's any consolation, the majority of TV over the "Festive Period" was pretty dire, as it has been for quite a few years. I wish the residents luck, perhaps SEH will refund any TV subscriptions for the period they have not been able to watch....

At least the heat generated by all that hand-wringing keeps you warm on these long winter nights, eh?

I am puzzled why the Spirit Of Sport clutching the TV remote needed to go to the papers over something as trivial as this though.

TV reception is not a life or death matter is it?

You missed the one last week "fireman trapped up a tree rescuing a seagull"
Wasn't much of a story, just a false alarm. Someone in Wickford reported a bird in a tree to the Basildon council and they, in their wisdom, decided it was stuck, and called the fire service. Who sent a man up with a rope, a net and a packet of tweets to try rescue it, only for the bird to fly away when he was two branches away. The fireman then couldn't come down, Health and Safety reasons! In the end he had to be rescued by helicopter. many excuses were made but not by the seagull, who wasn't available for comment.

How is this possibly a news story? in many parts of the world people don't have such things as social housing and/or TV.
As mentioned above there are a million better things to do at Christmas other than watch TV that they may have liked to try out, I don't mean to be cruel but I think these people are reinforcing peoples negative perceptions of themselves!

Looking at the bunch of misfits a zumba dvd would have done them a world of good.

I wonder what the comments would be if the TV system was lost over the hols for a street of half million pound homes , nothing less than legal action compensation and local mp on the case, these residents have kids that like the tv, just like anyone else, I wonder what the kids of private housing do all day, sit in their room playing the latest killer game or texting their chinless mates,
this problem with tv has occurred to most of the buildings the SEH contractors have worked on , often the faults have dragged on for months , this dish they fitted I believe supplies all channels, the company that won the contract had to take on staff and took on anyone , i warned senior SEH staff at a civic center meeting this firm was not up to the work and was ignored, the same with all the contracts , botched and unfinished work , unchecked then left to fail, and dont forget these overpriced contracts are paid for by ratepayers, and the residents that own their home there will have paid over the top in their service charge for this shoddy work, I must say the echo pics do make people look bad in a pic wherever they live

You don't need a TV Licence to own a TV. You need a TV licence to watch TV as it is broadcast. TV Licensing themselves will tell you this.
It is perfectly legal to own a TV without a licence if it is only used for watching video, DVDs, or for use with a games console, and is not connected to an aerial or cable.

Tv is additctive, The junkies in the picture seem strung out, one, perhaps cold turkeying, desperately point's her remote control, that she carries around with her, at the camera man hoping just hoping Eastenders will appear on his lens.

Nothing wrong with Quality Street, its Celebrations i cant stand, especially the advert where they all try to move in unison but look like a crowd pushing onto the last tube of the night, it was this advert that convinced me to give up watching the propaganda dumbing down box and take up empty tin can collecting.

To everyone moaning about the 'newsworthyness' of this story and others in the echo- would you rather the paper be filled with stories of tragedy and disaster? Murder, theft, fire, crashes?? no, these may not be sensational stories but I'd rather read lots of stories like this than even just one story of disaster. But then of course when there is a story of 'newsworthyness' you all moan about how terrible the town has become :/

Why should SEH have to compensate them for the loss of their TV channels for 2 days?

If they can afford to but the massive flat screens most of them have or even the sky TV that they also have then they have to accept that sometimes, the signal is lost.

All of us who have to work to get the things they have would have to deal with it and seek alternative entertainment...

Really pathetic that they have gone to the papers, like anyone feels sorry for them. It's only TV!

Whilst some people within Council accomodation genuinely need the help and appreciate that there is help available, the rest of them think its just a free ride who sponge off of everyone!

So i assume you are a tenant and have had work done by this company?

I have looked on their site and found information on KPI's and they reflect that they are meeting all targets.

As i am sure you know KPI's are used as part of the audit process, therefore must reflect a true record.

I think you will also find that SEH are very much dictated to by SBC so maybe you should direct your complaint that way, or better yet, do a weeks work with the company.

I am sure there are properties that have not been completed up to scratch but i guess you don't take a second to acknowledge the 98% of properties that are completed to standard?

Whilst i am sure you think i must have some connection to them, you are mistaken, i just believe that people should walk in another persons shoes before they judge.

It is also the responsibilty of the tenant to maintain their property. Same as a private owner has to look after theirs!

I once lived in a council house in a different borough and we took great pride in it. You wouldn't ruin a private house that you are renting so don't do it to the one that tax payers help towards!
