Essex: Video: Chris Huhne resigns after CPS announces charges Essex: Video: Chris Huhne resigns after CPS announces charges

Energy secretary Chris Huhne has resigned from his cabinet post as the Crown Prosecution Service confirmed he will face criminal charges.

It is alleged in 2003 he allowed his then wife Vicky Pryce to accepted responisibility for a speeding fine understood to be on the M11 near Stansted.

Director of Public Prosecutions, Keir Starmer QC said: "All the available evidence, including the new material, has now been carefully considered by the CPS and we have concluded that there is sufficient evidence to bring criminal charges against Mr Huhne and Ms Pryce for perverting the course of justice.

The essence of the charges is that between March and May 2003, Mr Huhne, having allegedly committed a speeding offence, falsely informed the investigating authorities that Ms Pryce had been the driver of the vehicle in question, and she falsely accepted that she was the driver.

Be sure your sins will find you out. If found guilty, he will never be trusted again. But an interesting lesson here for men about women - if they didn't already know.

Just from the cabinet, he'll still serve his Eastleigh constituents.

I for one would never do such a thing (as he is alleged to have done) and I'm sure that if I tried I'd find that the old Billericay enforcement office would do their utmost to pursue me.

Mind you, working for the Old Bill as a revenue collector can be quite lucrative when it comes to finding employment in the private sector upon retirement, as a certain Mr (formerly Pc) Trevor Hall will testify.

I wonder if the taxpayer will provide a car and driver, or whether he will use the bus.

Ironic isn't it - the ex-wife starts bandying a story round to get back at her ex-husband and she ends up in the dock as well. Serves her right!

Found the proper quote button!

The Government were cutting ministerial drivers, so he won't be getting them anymore, he should have to pay for Public Transport.
