Sentence for ex-Essex cricket star delayed by one week

SENTENCING for ex-Essex cricketer Mervyn Westfield was delayed by a week at the Old Bailey today.

The fast bowler appeared at the court in London where he pleaded guilty on January 12 to accepting or obtaining a corrupt payment.

The 23-year-old from Chelmsford admitted to taking a £6,000 bribe to bowl poorly during a one-day game against Durham on September 5, 2009, in a spot-fixing scam.

Mark Milliken-Smith QC, representing Westfield in court, said "administrative matters" had arisen and more time was needed before sentencing. He is now set to reappear next Friday.

It's beyond me why this should ever have gone to court in the first place. It only did because one of his old Essex team mates shopped him (who needs friends like that ?). A touch of jealousy perhaps ?
It wouldn't surprise me if this sort of thing hasn't been going on for years, in county and International cricket in this country.
There are probably more than a couple of High profile names in the sport who are thinking..."There but for the grace of God go I"
