Pigeon cull shock to residents in Laindon (From Echo)

Pigeons are like flying rats, in large numbers cause damange to property and pose a real health hazard.

Really not sure why this story is even news worthy...... perhaps there's going to be a claim against the council for the distress caused by witnessing the cull?

Exactly how many residents were "shocked" ?

Why were they shocked! what other method of getting rid of vermin on a large scale is there....

If the marksmen want more practice I would willing allow them to shoot the pigeons that sit on my back fence and Tv ariel. When they land and take off from the ariel the whole thing vibrates and I am beginning to wonder if it is safe.

Good grief! Some people really need to think before they start whinging to the Echo.
How on earth were they meant to get reid of them? Round them all up and ship them all to their own little island, off the coast of Argentina. They could, of course, poison them (may not be so quick). How about fighting vermin with vermin (send in the feral cats). I personally think they should have trained them to carry messages and given each housholder on the estate a pigeon. This would save the householder having to pay the current price hike by Royal Mail. You may even be able to train them to carry lightweight Ebay items with a bit of experience. Win-win all round.

You know what happened they discussed it with Association homes But as usaul I bet they neglected to tell private rent and private owned property owners. Happens all the time. Disgusting managemet skills as usaul.

Bet the Basildon High Street pigeons are thinking the same thing

If the lady in the picture was to look behind her she would see the mess left by these creatures. Culling them is the only option other than making them legal currency, that way they would be captured and cared for till used. Four pigeons has to be worth frozen chicken

Vermin need to be controlled, these days we have so many townie vermin lovers that we in the risk of disease.

And sorry to say the animal lover that said this will not control pigeons is wrong dead means dead.

I used to have a business in Southend. If you could have seen the damage, destruction and mess that Pigeons leave, maybe you would understand. I love birds and animals, but there are too many Pigeons.

To everyones comment above!! I am the woman in the picture above and who was shocked over pigeons being killed. Firstly to everyone who shoots there mouth of without finding out the facts first. The pigeons was not only shot but there heads cut off. Also the pigeons should have been dealt with by the council years ago. When laindon was a new town alot of houses had homing pigeons in this area. This is one of the reasons why the pigeons would not move. But as usual the animals suffer. It is the small minded faggots and idiots (basildon scum)-(not all) that make me ashamed to be a human being. But what did i expect? If you lot do your homework there was other ways of moving them on without killing them. But it costs money!!! So the council as well as the housing **** can't be bothered, so just kill them. Disgrace - There is always 2 sides to a story. Just one thing to say to everyone who agreed with this slaughter. ' no wander the world is the way it is today'. Hopefully all our children will be taught some humanity.

So if it costs money, were you happy to pay? If so, why didn't you get a private contractor in at your own expense to rehouse the poor things? Because you are quite happy to expect someone else to pay over the odds to sort out your issue.If you complain about a problem, don't be so quick to complain about the way your problem is dealt with, after all, you weren't willing to deal with it yourself. And if you really had researched other methods of getting rid of vermin, you would fully understand why the heads were removed. Humanity? Vermin destruction? Don't mix the two up.

Good grief woman. Get a grip. These are pests. Disease ridden, dirty pests. So you are saying they should be moved on to some other estate/area for other poor people to endure? That is very selfish of you. And before you state that they can be move to the countryside, this will either effect farmers or they will find their way to where the food is...back to the towns.

Does it matter how they were killed? Shot, decapitated, gassed...

I read this story with interest. Judging by the comments on here, most of them seem to be by people who enjoy conflict and are either trolls or sociopaths. Pigeons are a nuisance, but children or anyone seeing them decapitated for that matter is disgusting. There are a load of pigeons in the town centre, but what is an even bigger health hazard, are the smokers who populate nearly every square inch and usually exhale in their kids faces. About time Basildon was educated in what the real health hazard is...maybe the smokers should be shot.
