TWO men had to be rescued after their inflatable dinghy drifted out to sea.
Southend RNLI had to launch their hovercraft at about 8.20pm on Friday to bring the men safely to shore.
They were in the Ray, about three quarters of a mile off Chalkwell, clinging to the mooring chain of the last vessel before open water.
Luckily the men, in their mid twenties, had managed to contact the coastguard by mobile phone.
An RNLI spokesman said: "The two had gone out to fish, without any lifejackets, lights or marine radio, in a boat more suited to playing on the beach, when they were overcome by the strong wind, an ebbing tide and unable to paddle back ashore, drifted in The Ray Gut."
