CROWDS turned out to help the 1st Ramsden and Downham Scout Group celebrate their 100th anniversary with a special day of events.

More than 100 scouts, cubs, parents and dignitaries turned out for a commemorative service at the Ramsden Bellhouse Village Hall in Church Road.

A special photo exhibition was also put up to allow visitors to see how much the Scout group has changed since it begun in 1912.

Janet Jeffree, group Scout leader who helped arrange the special day, said: “It was fantastic. We had about 160 people turn out which was very impressive.

“The service in the morning was led by the Rev Geoffrey Griggs and we had the deputy mayor Chris Jackman and his wife there and he said a few words which was very nice.

“It was an amazing achievement to celebrate 100 years of the group and we are all very proud.”

The morning service was followed by a light lunch and lots of fun activities for the children including map-reading, branding and plate spinning.

Before the celebrations all the Scouts were given the opportunity to design a badge to commemorate the 100th anniversary which would be added to the uniforms of all the members.

The competition was won by Charlie Collis, nine, who said he was very proud of his achievement but didn’t expect to win.

Mrs Jeffree, who lives in Ramsden Bellhouse, added: “We would just like to say thank you to everyone who turned out and if anyone is interested in becoming a member of the scout group we are always pleased to welcome new members.”
