ILLEGAL tobacco worth £1million in lost tax has been seized in Southend.

Essex Police discovered the haul of almost five tonnes of loose tobacco in an industrial unit in the town.

HM Revenue and Customs officers were informed and are now investigating.

The tobacco, some found un-packaged and loose on tarpaulin on the floor of the building has an estimated duty loss of ₤1million.

HMRC will not release further details of where the warehouse is due to operational reasons.

Bob Gaiger from HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) said: “Some of this tobacco was found just lying on the floor of a warehouse without any regard to the quality or cleanliness of the final product.

“Criminals who sell illicit tobacco don’t care who they sell to.

“They will sell to children and young people and will deprive honest local traders of income.
