Elderly man hospitalised after chip pan fire in Southend

A Southend man was left with burns and suffering from smoke inhalation after a chip pan fire.

The male, believed to be in his sixties, was hurt after the pan in his South Avenue home caught alight at about 7.20pm on Saturday.

He had attempted to put out the flames himself, but was unable to as the blaze had spread too much.

Firefighters from Southend were called to the scene and extinguished the flames by 7.45pm.

Paramedics took the man to Southend Hospital to be treated for his injuries.

Another person who was inside the property at the time of the incident escaped unharmed.

The home has been left with some smoke damage.

Hopefully the gentleman will suffer no long term effects.

Strange though (although given the Echo's record), that we can leave comments on this "harmless" story.

When it comes to stories such as
"Woman lied over sexual assault claims"

Oh dear, that's a bit to sensitive to allow the rabble to comment on.

Who on earth would give the elderly a chip pan.
Totally irresponsible action by a love one?
Or is it an attempt to knock him off for the inheritance.
All sounds iffey to me.

So much easier to buy a bag of oven chips. Just pop them in the oven, less dangerous than chip pans.

When is being in your sixties "elderly"?

Yellow Peril, I was going to say the same, maybe 30 years ago a pensioner was considered elderly but now elderly to me (in my 40's) I think of someone in their late 70's or 80's.
