Male breaks leg after ditch fall in Shoebury - Updated

A man was left with a broken leg after falling into a ten foot deep ditch in Shoebury on Saturday night.

The casualty aged 31 fell into the ditch off Ness Road at about 9.20pm, breaking his left leg in the process.

Despite being able to call for help from his mobile phone, paramedics could not find the man with the police having to be called out to search for him.

He was eventually found by officers near the junction of Church Road after a search which took over an hour to complete.

Crews from Southend fire station had to assist paramedics who were unable to get into the deep ditch by using one of their ladders to drag him out.

Shortly after being retrieved from the ditch at about 11.30pm, the man was taken to Southend Hospital for treatment.
