UP TO 180 jobs are set to go at Coryton oil refinery next week as the first wave of redundancies hits the striken plant.

It came as more than 100 Coryton workers and their families packed into a meeting in Pitsea as a rally was held to whip up support to keep the refinery open.

The meeting, arranged by Unite, was held at Pitsea Leisure Centre last night following news of the first confirmed job losses at the plant.

Administrators PriceWaterhouse Coopers made the announcement yesterday afternoon while also saying it was “highly unlikely” that the plant would stay open as a refinery.

The bombshell announcement was given to employees following a meeting with management.

It is feared hundreds more jobs will be lost if the refinery, off the Manorway in Stanford-le-Hope, closes. It has a 500-strong workforce and employs around 350 contractors.

The cost of its closure to the local economy is estimated at £100million.

Why doesn't Unite buy it and run it as a co-operative. They seem to have lots of cash.

Your shortsightedness is appalling. Why don't you say something helpful instead of demean the hundreds and hundreds of people that will lose their livelihood over this? This is 100 million pounds out of the LOCAL economy. To give that a bit more impact, that's £100,000,000. So it won't just affect the refinery, it will affect peoples business which means their jobs which means their homes.
Oh and FUN FACT.. the same day the government refused to provide the £50mil which could keep the refinery open, it announced 100 BILLION POUNDS in new aid to the BANKS.
The effects of this will be a burden on everyone. Coryton refinery is one of - if not the biggest - oil refinerys in the UK. This shuts we will have to rely on IMPORTS of fuel. Naturally then, FUEL PRICES WILL GO UP. I'm guessing no one wants that.
There you go Echo, I've done your job for you.
