Investigation started over "suspicious" fire in Westcliff

An investigation has been launched over the cause of a fire at a block of flats in Westcliff on Tuesday night.

Firefighters were called out to Mornington House, in Station Road, at about 11.30pm to reports of a small fire.

Around 50 residents had to evacuated from the building while crews from Southend fire station tackled the blaze on the second floor.

The cause of the fire has been described as suspicious with both Essex Fire and the police starting their own investigations over it.

Anyone with information about how the fire may have started should call police on 101.

I lived in Mornington House 20 years ago and it was a lovely place to live. Once the caretaker left, the building started to go down hill with the council housing those difficult to house there.
