Crowds flock to see Olympic Torch Relay in Southend

THOUSANDS of people braved the damp conditions to watch the Olympic Torch pass through Southend.

From about 9am, visitors started lining the barriers along the route through Prince Avenue, Victoria Avenue, the High Street and the seafront.

People waved flags and blew whistles as the torchbearers completed their relay in 300metre stints.

Olympic swimmer Mark Foster carried the torch from the Lloyds bank to the top of Pier Hill where he passed it to Sonia Richards from Canvey.

She then passed it to FitzWimarc schoolgirl Sophie Riches, 16, who carried it to the 1,750-strong choir on the seafront.

The choir, made up of schoolchildren and adults from Southend, sang a specially-commissioned song and entertained crowds before the torch moved off along the seafront towards Hadleigh.

The choir in Southend was an absolute joy to behold and every child should be extremely proud of their participation. I have never heard such a magnificant sound than that accompanying the torch and it must be one of the best shows any town presented on the Olympic trail !

It was magical. I am so proud to live and work in Southend today. Everyone was crying with emotion. It wasn't just the torch, it was the whole feeling of community.

Great, but what a shame that so many residents like us on Canvey will not see this on local Tv. We cannot get Look East as the signel comes from Kent.
Good luck to all the torch carriers.

I am so proud of my daughter from Westborough Primary School who was in the choir today. What a wonderful song, an emotional day, had a tear in my eye when I saw the torch, a day to remember forever and proud of my daughter to be part of it.

John t, the signal is possibly strong enough you should get it on freeview. Try a manual tune on channel 44 and see if it puts bbc in the 800 range?

The Churches of Leigh and Westcliff loved giving away free Fairtrade Tea and Coffee and water to the crowds at the torch relay. You can see a montage of photos at http://www.facebook.

That was taken on Western Esplanade, must have been just gone 12.30pm, which was well after the actual event near what is now City Beach.

There you could barely move it was that jam packed.

Just have a look at some of the shots from the event taking place there.

And the damp? I don't think anybody really noticed the drizzle, at least I didn't but then I went for the full soaking at the River Pageant in London. What's a little water?

yes you are. We are allowed to show our pride in Britain if you dislike it so much MOVE. Go out to three mile island you wont get any Olympic coverage there. I'll help pack your bags & you can fly from Southend Airport.

I am fed up with the whole thing.
There has been disregard for the ordinary person from day one. From all those who lost their businesses, to those who cannot get tickets because all the big kn0bs had first choice. Then there is the fact that the general public cannot park outside their own house because of the road closures. I needed to visit the bank on Friday, to do some important finance, and bugg*r me! the banks were closed for the p0xy torch run. Then there is the case of the sculpture with no planning permission. Funny how they managed to get the permission so bl00dy quick. I am trying to get planning permission for some building work for a community project, and it is going to take 6 to 9 months. Back-handers and ****, that is what it is all about. We will suffer for this olympics for years to come.

Well said.

100% of the people who went did so out of their own free will, 100% of the peoople who went got soaked, 100% of the people that went enjoyed the event and left happy to have been part of Southends history.
