THOUSANDS of cheering spectators lined the streets of Basildon for a glimpse of the Olympic torch.

Young and old proudly waved flags and cheered on the torch bearers as they carried the golden torch through the town.

The convoy travelled from Hadleigh after doing a tour of Hadleigh Castle at 2.30pm.

After doing a lap of the swimming pool and the track at Basildon's sporting village by karate teacher Marc Grayston the torch travelled along Upper Mayne towards the town centre before finishing at Nether Mayne.

It will travel to Grays in Thurrock before going through Brentwood to Chelmsford.

What a load of old misery guts you all are (Nebs excepted). Your ancestors would be ashamed of you. There was a time that the Olympics coming to the UK would be celebrated by all as a symbol of national pride. The above posts are reflective of a cynical and dysfunctional society, wracked with a bitter egocentrism. Shame on you!

I welcome the Olympics to the UK and all that it represents. As the torch passed through Basildon today it, it's bearers and entourage were cheered and welcomed. The achievement of the olympians and the adversity overcome by many of the torch bearers should be an inspiration to us all.

What an utter ****-up by Tony Ball i was at nethermayne by cherrydown there where no barriers to stop people crossing the road the traffic was not stopped lorrys, cars and buses where coming within feet of hitting people. I saw at least half a dozen people very nearly hit by traffic how noone was seriously injured or killed i never know there where not enough marshels or police to keep this event safe. There where young kids running backwards and fowards across the road in front of traffic and even when i saw one young steward trying to keep people back on the pavement she was totally ignored. This whole event in basildon was badly managed like i said another classic Tony Ball ****-up. Do us all a favour Mr Ball resign you could organise a drunken night in a brewrey!!!!!!!!

Please do us a favour, don't feed the trolls.

Best thing to do is ignore him, he'll get bored if nobody jumps on his bandwaggon. That's how you do it with stroppy children.

And as a general note, the Olympic Games are not about nationality really. It is a celebration of the individual athletes achievements and rightly so.
