Basildon couple's record-breaking pirate wedding in Sussex

Shiver me timbers! James and Emma on their big day Shiver me timbers! James and Emma on their big day

A COUPLE chose to walk the plank rather than the aisle on their pirate-themed wedding day.

Emma Drury and James Ward, from The Gore, Basildon , celebrated their wedding in front of 14,000 other “pirates” during a record-breaking event in Hastings.

Each year the East Sussex town puts on a pirate day, but Emma and James are the first to get married as pirates.

Emma said: “What a day. It was brilliant and so memorable. As we left Hastings Town Hall, we were met by 80 pirate drummers and there were pirates as far as we could see. It was a shiver me timbers moment.”

The Jolly Roger was flown from the town hall, a pirate-themed wedding cake was created and even the registrars who married the couple got dressed up for the occassion.

The couple were also joined by 45 close friends and family for their big day. Emma added: “We are huge Pirates of the Carribean fans, for obvious reasons, and our house is covered in pirate stuff. We just love it.”

Roger Crouch, event organiser, said: “They were really overwhelmed by the whole occasion and it was wonderful to see people get into the spirit and go to such lengths to be here.”
