Updated: Firefighters tackle blaze in derelict South Ockendon building

FIREFIGHTERS spent more than five hours tackling a blaze in derelict South Ockendon building.

Engines from Grays, Orsett and Basildon were first called to the incident in Mollands Lane shortly after 1am on Sunday.

Officers were able to extinguish the flames by 6.35am but remained at the scene to ensure the area was safe.

They reported that the building was 100 percent alight.

The cause of the fire is not yet known and a joint police and fire service investigation has now been launched.

The building that was ablaze was Grange Farm, a listed building all that stands is the chimmly this morning. I was awoken by cracking and the fireservice due to no fault of their own aproached the blaze from a road they could not get down. It took 45 mins for them to reverse find a turning point to get to the now well alight grange farm and another 30 mins to fill the fire engine with water from a near by lake. All everyone could do was watch Grange Farm burn. A dreadfull night for the history off Ockenden and even worse for the people who own Grange Farm. Thurrock council need to sit down with the fire service and put an action plan in place for access and the wereabouts of hydrants so more of south ockendons history does not end up in a tragic state as Grange Farm. As to the cause of the fire i hope some progress is made.
