A YOUNG gymnast was delighted when Olympic bronze medalist Max Whitlock stopped for a photograph, despite being mobbed by fans.

Katie Davies, eight, of The Fremnells, Basildon , joined South Essex Gymnastics Club when she was three in an attempt to strengthen her weak heart.

She has been a keen supporter of Max and always makes him a well-done card whenever he competes.

The 19-year-old showed his new-found fame has not changed him as he made time to thank Katie for her latest design, during his return to the club, based at the Basildon Sporting Village, during a recent homecoming party.

Katie’s mum Bev Davies, 40, said: “Max is just a really lovely boy. He’s quietly spoken and so good with the kids. His success hasn’t gone to his head at all.

"Even though he was so busy during his visit to the gym he still got round to seeing Katie.”
