Groups in talks over Shoebury Youth Centre

A Hindu group, Scouts and a school are among organisations to express an interest in using an abandoned £2.9million centre.

Representatives from the Hindu Association of Southend and District, Shoebury High School and First Shoebury Scouts have all held talks with the council over hiring space at Shoebury Youth Centre.

At the latest full council meeting, opposition councillors claimed the whole situation with the centre was a “debacle”.

However councillor James Courtney, cabinet member for children and learning, revealed officers had held three meetings with the high school and there was a meeting with various community leaders planned next month.

He also told how six other organisations have booked places at the centre, but was unable to reveal who the groups were.

Give it to the Hindu group. I regularly go to their Shree Ganesh and Ganesh Visarjan festivals on East beach, and they are wonderful people with a great sense of community.
