Co-Op workers threatened with handgun by robber on Canvey

SHOCKED supermarket workers were threatened with a handgun by a balaclava-clad man.

The attack was the second armed robbery on Canvey yesterday, Monday.

Police are now hunting for the man who went into the Co-Op, in Linden Way, at 9.30pm where he threatened two female members of staff with a handgun and forced them to hand over a three-figure sum of cash.

The robbery came after a shopkeeper was threatened with a metal pole and told to hand over just £28 at Canvey Island Dry Cleaning, in the High Street, when the thug burst into his shop.

Not much response from our local MP Rebecca when my local post office in leigh beck was held up with a gun. Same here. I think our MPs just accept guns are part of life now and we have to takeour chances. Sad very sad.

Hardly breaking news, this was all over Facebook at 9 am this morning! Where is the CCTV for Co-Op, this is not the first time the staff have been threatened at that shop. It's in a really precarious position, based in a maze of dark roads and alleyways. I certainly wouldn't have any of my family working there!

Not much response? You mean none. Then what do you expect? For all Bob Spink's faults you cannot say he wouldn't have at least shown concern. Bet there are more than a few regret giving our current MP a vote.

Did I miss something here, where did the MPs name figure in this report and why exactly was it brought up when it has nothing to do with either of them and the story is about an armed robber, would it not be better that people focus on the damage done by this thug to the people who run the shop.

In Spinkies case it was called a photo opportunity, come on John you can do better than to use Mr litigation as a good example.

Why has this turned into a political debate? This is the initial reporting of the crime, "breaking news", supposedly so why would you be expecting comments and statements from political figures?

OH I am sorry I always thought that if idiots start running around with guns, Parliament might do something. Like stop closing Police stations. Put more police on the streets. Sorry about that guns it is then. I must be behind the times.

It's a known fact that the House of Commons take delivery of the Echo Newspaper on a daily basis! As this event has only just occurred I think it is very narrow minded of you to assume that Parliament are going to leap in within hours. What are you expecting: Nick Clegg and his Batmobile? Yes, we need action to stop the police/services cuts but there is a time and a place to be berating MP's and their, in your opinion, lack of action and this is neither.

I wrote to MPSs MEPs when my local Post office suffered the same fate early in the year. Perhaps if something had been done then I would take your point. MPs have got used to guns on the streets in my view, its yesterdays news. Not headline news at all. Just part of everyones life now. Happy days for those that do not get shot.

They were actually told to hand over /just/ £28? How peculiar.

Come on upset photo opportunity or not at least he was there. Organising meetings (remember the the school for excluded children on Canvey). Photo opportunity or not what has our MP done about Thorney Bay or the over 300 objections from residents about Canvey Supply land overdevelopment Answer absolutely nothing. Actually supports the overdevelopment at Canvey Supply and I have that in writing from her. That just for the record is 99 properties mostly flats whereas the whole of Canvey Supply's land and ALL the remaining industrialised area around is shown as 50 properties. Let down by her personally yes, let down for being silent on development on green belt at Thorney Bay personally, but opposing building on green belt in Benfleet yes. Am I alone in thinking that including you upset?

How can an MP of any colour condemn what has been authorised via a legal process.
To the best of my knowledge Ms Harris has never threatened and or issued gagging orders via a court to stop the truth being told, I know SPINKIE can't say that.
I know who I will trust.

Legal process? Try reading the conditions for building on a risk 3 flood plain (all of Canvey) and the minutes of the Neighbourhood Meeting March 2010 which clearly states that Castle Point Council cannot allow building on Thorney Bay because it is too dangerous to live there. That was THEIR reply to a residents question.
So explain? I assume you know that nothing should be built on a risk 3 flood plain unless there is no other alternative. That means the whole BOROUGH not just Canvey.
Doubt me write to our MP and see if she denies it.
