FORMER Basildon MP Harvey Proctor has announced his immediate retirement as private secretary to a peer in Leicestershire.

Mr Proctor has spent 14 years working for the Duke of Rutland and living at the 16,000-acre Belvoir Castle.

The retirement announcement comes within weeks of the former Tory politician’s home on the estate being raided by police officers investigating historic sex abuse allegations.

Mr Proctor, MP for Basildon from 1979 to 1983 and Billericay from 1983 to 1987, has denied any knowledge of a VIP paedophile ring in Westminster during the 1970s and 1980s.

In a statement released by Belvoir Castle, Mr Proctor said: "I have had an enjoyable 14 years working at Belvoir Castle and I thank the Duke and Duchess and all with whom I have worked for their kindness and assistance over these years.

"I have decided to retire from my post as private secretary and this is with the blessing of the Duke and Duchess."

Earlier this month, Mr Proctor stated he was keen to be interviewed by police so he could clear his name.
