Move to prevent Barn Hall project

THE first stage of the appeal against the decision to allow a controversial housing development in Wickford will be heard at the High Court on February 19.

Developer Gleeson Homes wanted to build 200 homes on the green field Barn Hall site, off Station Lane, but met with fierce opposition from local residents.

The original planning application was rejected by Basildon Council, but that decision, although supported by the planning inspector, was overturned by the Secretary of State.

The council is appealing against the Secretary of State’s decision and the first stage of the appeal will be heard at the High Court on Thursday, February 19.

Tony Ball, cabinet member with responsibility for planning, said: “This land is highly valued by the community and they don’t want to see it built on. We will do everything we can to try to overturn the decision.”

It's a shame that Cllr Tony Ball doesn't have the same committment to Gloucester Park in Basildon, which he and his Tory party colleagues seem only too pleased to concrete over. But then I suppose it may have more to do with the fact that many new towners who use Gloucester Park and the facilites that he wants to sell to pay for his party's grand plans in the park don't count for very much, at least not as much as the Tory voting residents in Wickford.

The situation is the same, if people feel strongly enough about their greenbelt being sold off whether it be in Basildon, Wickford or anywhere else, then for god sake get together and form a group or residents association and fight to keep your rightful heritage. I happen to live in Wickford and know that Barn Hall is worth fighting for even though I don't live within yards of the area, I know that it is immoral and wrong to build on this beauty spot. Look at Dry Street, even the Echo, bless them, were behind that fight and they won. This is never going to go away but we have a democracy don't we and if our voice is loud enough it will be heard. Write to your MP, get signatures, if you really do feel that something is wrong then do something about it, shout about it. This idiotic government won't be in power for ever and then perhaps the next government will listen to the people who they are voted in to serve.
Probably gone on a bit sorry but it just makes me go angry.

The only reason this has really gone to court is that it is councillor Buckleys backyard, other action groups have had to fund themselves, but he is using tax payers money to go to court.
