A SCHOOLGIRL has won a national competition to design an eco-friendly shopping bag for store giant Tesco.
Creative Shannon McElvenney, 14, will soon see her own colourful design brought to life and on sale in the Mayflower Retail Park Tesco, in Basildon, where she shops.
The teenager won the Talent2Trade competition, run by Tesco as part of a Government campaign to showcase children’s artwork.
Shannon who goes to Beauchamps High School, in Wickford, triumphed over pupils from more than 120 schools to win the competition. As a result, she will see her bag on sale in Tesco stores from next Wednesday.
Shannon, whose eye-catching design aims to encourage shoppers to ditch plastic bags, said: “I can’t wait to see my design printed on an actual bag and sold in Tesco. It’s so exciting.
“I tried to make the design colourful and bright, so people would want to pick it up, rather than a plastic one, helping to reduce waste.”
Shannon’s entry impressed a judging panel of industry experts, including designer Cath Kidston, who said: “It’s lovely to see creative talents blossoming in our young people.
“When I was at school, having a talent for art or design often went unnoticed, so I’m proud to support competitions like Talent2Trade that recognise the wonderful achievements of today’s youth.”
