Parents told learn first aid to treat kids

MORE parents need to learn first aid skills instead of always relying on medics in dangerous situations, a leading member of St John Ambulance says.

Richard Bloomfield, has urged mums and dads across south Essex to enrol on a first aid course.

His plea comes after the Echo last week reported how a mum had criticised the lack of first aid facilities at Old Leigh beach after her six year old daughter Abbie slipped and fell while paddling there during a family day out.

Joanne Robinson, 42, of Ravenscourt Drive, Vange, was outraged after she ran for help to the first aid hut located beside the beach after Abbie slipped on a concrete slab, only to find it was closed. The youngster was eventually taken to hospital and treated for minor injuries.

The hut is manned by volunteers from the St John Ambulance service, but only at weekends during the summer holidays and on selected special events. The funding for this comes from Leigh Town Council.

Mr Bloomfield, spokesman for the south Essex branch of the St John Ambulance, said: “We wish to point out St John Ambulance provides first aid cover with their volunteer members who support their communities commensurate with their working and family lives. St John does not have the capacity to provide seven days a week first aid cover at any one location. Therefore, together with Leigh Town Council, times for first aid cover are prioritised for the busiest times.

“We would suggest parents who have responsibility for their children’s well-being, should learn basic first aid themselves, as generally they are the ones on the spot at the time and the need could be urgent, such as breathing difficulties, choking and serious bleeding.”

Mr Bloomfield added: “Basic first aid training could save a life in the most extreme cases. It doesn’t take a lot to learn. We even have emergency life saving courses that take three hours.

“First aid skills are something every parent should know.”

too blinking true. Why blame others for your lack of parenting skills. Why are we living in a "blame everyone else, but me" society, why cant parents take responsibility anymore and be a damned parent. Its so easy to blame others, soon there wont be any events or shows to attend because the organisers will be too damned scared in case they get sued by an incompetant parent who cant be arsed to look out for their offspring and then when a simple accident happens and they dont know how to deal with it, they blame the event. Lets all sit indoors and wrap ourselves in cotton wool and stop living, because sooner or later it will be considered too dangerous to walk out the front door in case a bird falls out of the sky and lands on your head and hurts you.

Learn to look after your own kids, learn first aid, courses are not that expensive, besides most of the above is common sense anyway.

If someone doesan't know how to deal with kids cuts and bruises then they shouldn;t have kids - the sooner a breeding licence is introduced the better - might stop some of these f wits reproducing.

speak to the local red cross, St John's Ambulance Group, they will all have details of a local first aid course nearer than Northampton. There is a St Johns Ambulance station on Purdeys way Rochford, i am sure they can point someone in the right direction, There is also courses run as evening classes. I find it very hard to believe that northampton is the only place one can go for a first aid course. If someone doesnt know how to stick on a plaster i doubt very much if they have the intelligence to operate a pc/internet anyway. Yellow pages, the library, any place like that, and funnily enough even the local hospital may have information and the local GP.

So dont go giving the parents that dont want to be parents and want to lay the blame for their incompetance and stupidity on others, any more excuses.
