VISITORS can get their skates on and have a go on a temporary skating rink in Wickford next weekend.

For one day only a synthetic rink will be installed outside the Willows Shopping Centre.

The event, called Wickford On Ice – Get your Skates On, will be raising cash for the Helen Rollason Cancer Charity, which funds research into the disease and support centres.

The rink will be open from 10am to 5pm on Saturday, July 18.

Jill Profit, Willows Shopping Centre manager, said: “This will be a fantastic day-long event.

“Why not join us for a skate around the rink and raise money for a worthwhile cause?”

Visitors will also be in with a chance of winning in the raffle too.

As well as plenty of entertainment for children, mums and dads can take part in the “Best Mum on Ice” and the “Best Dad on Ice” contest.

A barbecue, music and other events will be laid on.

The Helen Rollason Cancer Charity is named after the first woman to present Grandstand – BBC Sport’s presenter Helen Rollason, who was from Brentwood.

She died from cancer in 1999.
