Rotarians and pupils collect £18k Haiti cash

A SCHOOL raised almost £3,000 for victims of earthquake-devastated Haiti in just one day.

Pupils from the Mayflower High School, in Billericay, raked in the cash for the Haiti Relief Fund by baking cakes and having a uniform swap day.

A total of £2,800 was gathered when sixth form students donned their old uniforms, while pupils in Years 7 to 11 donated at least £1 to leave theirs at home.

More funds were added to the pot when five pupils from Year 11 at the school, Rebecca Butler, Sophie Lorenz, Isla Robertson, Callum Harris and Sam Hayday, held a cake sale which raised just over £500.

Meanwhile, figures show shoppers at Basildon’s Eastgate Centre are still putting their hands in their pockets for the millions of people affected by last month’s disaster.

So far a staggering £15,186 has been collected for the Eastgate and Rotary Club of Basildon Concord’s Shelter-Box Appeal.

Mike Horton, spokesman for the centre, said: “We are very proud of the Eastgate team and the people of Basildon.

“Initially, we had a fund-raising target of £10,000, but this was achieved ahead of schedule and we carried on.

“As a result, 300 people will now have ShelterBox aid.Nowhere unites more behind an appeal than the people of Basildon.

“We say a genuine thank you to all who have made this remarkable achievement possible.”

Hundreds of ShelterBoxes, which contain lifesaving equipment, including a ten- man tent, torches, warm clothing and cooking utensils, have been distributed to regions of Haiti left crumbling after the 7.0 magnitude earthquake.

l Members of the Rotary club will be out collecting again tomorrow evening at the Towngate Theatre in Basildon.

They are also looking to hear from any schools or organisations which want to help out with their ShelterBox appeal.
