A MAN had to be cut free from his car following a crash in Wickford.

Firefighters were called to the incident on the A132 shortly after 7pm on Saturday (March 13).

They used cutting equipment to free a man, thought to be in his 50s, from a small car which was in collision with a van.

He suffered head injuries and was treated by paramedics from the East of England Ambulance Service.

A woman was also discovered laying on the roadside at the scene. She was conscious but taken away in an ambulance for further treatment.

Gary Hastings, station officer at Basildon, said crews spent about an hour at the scene.

He said: “It was a very small car, a Mercedes A160 I think, and the way it was constructed made it difficult to cut the seat away. But our team worked well to take to roof off, and the man was left in the care of the ambulance service.”
