Nottinghamshire council still pressing for green belt homes in Basildon

A COUNCIL in the Midlands insists it will press on with plans to develop a whole new village on green belt land near Pitsea – despite being warned it is unlikely to get planning permission.

Nottinghamshire County Council wants to build as many as 1,300 homes on 120 acres of land at Little Chalvedon Hall, off Pound Lane.

The council paid £4.2million for the site a year ago as an investment for its pension fund.

A newly-launched website detailing the proposals says public consultations over the plans will begin soon.

The website suggests the development could include a small shopping centre, a primary school, a recreation ground and sports facilities.

Dave Newberry, director of Meridian Strategic Land, the company co-ordinating the plans for the council, said: “This is a perfect location for a strategic site of this size.

“North Benfleet does not yet have a centre as such, which this will bring. We want to engage with residents and the parish council on the plans.”

The proposals have already provoked a public row between Basildon Council and the Midlands county council.

Basildon Council leader Tony Ball and chief executive Bala Mahendran have written to their counterparts in Nottinghamshire, asking why Basildon Council was not consulted before the site was bought.

Mr Ball’s letter warned Basildon would allow no development on the site for at least 20 years under his council’s clearly-defined green belt policy..

He added “It is not for Basildon to give up valuable green belt to fund another council’s pensions.

“It is also not good practice to risk a pension fund on speculation. Our position on protecting the green belt is quite clear.”

If Basildon Council turned down a planning application, Nottinghamshire could appeal against the decision.

The proposal has rankled still further because it came to light just before Basildon council was due to publish details of the parts of the borough which are likely to be zoned for future development. The announcement is due later this week.

The website with details of the proposals can be seen at www.littlechalvedonhall.com

If they agree to reciprocate and let Essex County Council build the 21,000 homes they are proposing to build in Basildon in Sherwood Forest instead it'll all balance out nicely....

Tell them we propose to site the new travellers site along side it.

Can't believe they would waste time on money on this project.

Basildon Council have clearly stated their policy on Green Belt development.

The attempted DF development was declared illegal.

Can't see the difference between an individual buying Green Belt land and a County Council buying Green Belt land.

Notts CC are just speculating in the same way as DF illegals.

No better than chancers, betting with pension money in the hope of making a killing.

Now waiting for Mincer to defend NCC in the same way as his DF mates.

It could be they would have to provide a % of 'accommodation' for travellers in any new development.

" Basildon Council have clearly stated their policy on Green Belt development"

CLEARLY? But they have approved building a dog kennels and two houses, to accomodate those who are accommodating the dogs,on greenbelt land! (something they will need to explain to the planning inspectorate dealing with appeals) Nothing clear about it at all is there? Really!

And there are more plans awaiting official approval which looks like now being delayed to let the memory of DF dissipate so they can be let through with no comparisons, problem is DF will never be forgotten, a film, 3 plays and many books are in the pipeline re: DF.

DF is well and truly immersed in the social conscience and will in time to come be looked back on in horror!

I can't for the life of me imagine why you think that this shambles is "well and truly immersed in the social conscience". Whose social conscience, exactly?

Seems to contradict your contention that somehow we are medieval people who camped outside the turnpike of villages/towns.

Its a shame what you use your 'superior' schooling for im sure many might think but its not about education is it but jealously, Taking into account your own exposure of your family status, and the bitterness you have from that, its no wonder you attack a people well known for their family loyalty and togetherness.

But buck up its not too late change your demonic hate and you might yet get lucky again in life.

We have a Conservative administration that is apparently so protective of green belt land yet have sold off huge chunks of various children's playing fields for housing development ie Markhams Chase, Crane Farm Road, Gloucester Park, are proposing Northlands Park, Kent View Recreation Ground and have pencilled in Lee Chapel North. Who's playing field is next and is any children's playing field south of the A127 safe under this administration??????
??? A new village with the infrastucture seems a better proposition to me than to build on peoples recreation grounds, cramming everyone into concrete ghettos where there will be no community.

Anyone know who cashed in to the tune of £4.2m? i.e. who owned Little Chalvedon Hall previously? He/she/they are sitting pretty. They must have sold the land on the assumption it would be developed as farmland is not so expensive as prime building land. Wonder if the previous owner is connected to the local Tories?

Did I mention you by name? But if the cap fits.....

None of my posts contain racial abuse.

Not liking you or your friends does not amount to racial abuse.

It is something you have earned.

Enjoy.

I never said you named anyone by name but implied i inferred you were indicating yourself when you posted 'supermouth"

You dont know me or my friends to like or dislike, unless you are stating you dislike people because of their culture! Surely not? Wouldn't that make you a... gulp...*faint's to the ground in shock and fear*
