Fire crews rescue child stranded on ice

FIRE crews were called in to rescue a child who became stranded on a frozen lake.

The incident happened just before 5pm on Saturday when the child had wandered on to the lake at the Essex Wildlife Trust in Drake Road, Chafford Hundred.

Fire crews from Grays and Leigh were called to rescue the child and, wearing dry suits and using rescue paths, began their rescue bid.

The child was safely rescued by 5.30pm.

This is one incredibly lucky child. What the hell was he/she doing on the frozen lake to start with? Where were the parents - although the report does not specify the child's age - but you have to wonder where the common sense in all this is.

It were a group of boys, one of them I assumed thought it would be a good idea to go out onto one of the frozen lakes and of course fell through. Apparently his mate went out there to try and get him out and also fell in. None of them phoned 999, it was by pure luck that a Police Officer was watching them at the time

There by the grace of god!
When I was a child from about the age of 9 or 10, I did things and got into scrapes, that would make modenn day parents reel in anguish and horror. But if they took a couple of seconds to think back to their own childhood, perspective would be regained. I used to play in the pits where now sits C100 and Lakey as a child and much fun was had by all.
No the child hadn't wandered on to the ice, they thought "I wonder how far I can get on the ice".

My Partner was on a bike ride when he saw lots of kids playing on the ice in the Gorge about 4.30 - he warned them to come off the ice as it was dangerous and could go through and that it was deep water under the ice. They wouldn't take any notice of him. He returned home and was telling me and we decided to call the police to advise them this was happening - as we reached for the phone the sirens went past our house to the gorge and we just knew what had happened. The boys were sliding and jumping on the ice with no t shirts on, how many times do people have to be warned - there were big red notices warning people not to go on the ice! Essex Radio said it was two kids that had to be rescued. Wonder which story is right!

Either way they were rescued and I'm sure all got a good telling off!

Mrs J, they are kids. Tell them a dozen times, put all the signs up you like and they will still do it, it’s what kids do.
I look back at what I did when I was between 9 and 15 and wonder why or how I’m still here in my late 40s. People saw us and never once did we get the emergency services turn up as there was no need. Quite why you decided to call the police mystifies me. What would you have done had it been a group of older kids say 16-20? Nothing.
Did I tell mum and dad, not until years later. Our kids did similar things, we warned them and they ‘listened’ just like I did when my mum and dad warned me. Believe me had anyone reported them to the police, they would have got some well chosen advice.
So yes it’s dangerous, but unless we allow our kids to lose the ‘cotton wool and bubble wrap’, they are going to grow up lesser people. They will hurt themselves and some may suffer worse, but this is all part of life’s learning curve and as a parent you cannot be there 24/7 and neither should you try. Today schools invariably close when it’s a bit snowy for no other reason than H&S and the kids might get hurt, teachers have told me this. My schools never shut when it snowed and a **** good time we had, sliding on icy playgrounds and having snowball fights, no doubt hurting ourselves and maybe shedding the odd tear and getting wet with a snowball put down your neck, which wasn’t bullying, but would probably be considered as such in our sterile modern world. The last 2-3 generations have been suffocated due to governmental and media led hysteria about H&S and fear of people out to harm children. So by all means warn them but if they aren’t your kids and they don’t listen, don’t get involved.
So as Bernard says they probably got home and got told off and will now think twice before doing it or probably not.

Well I know all that - and we use to have great fun playing snowballs and our teachers joined in. We didn't call anyone - but obviously someone did - and thank goodness - they were rescued. I just hope next time - when I turn a blind eye - it doesn't end up in tragedy! I expect they learnt a very hard and frightening lesson.
