Basildon Labour group honours latest victim of Afghanistan conflict

Basildon Labour group has honoured Corporal Alex Guy who was killed in Afghanistan on Friday.

Councillor Gavin Callaghan said: "The thoughts of all Labour councillors and members in Basildon are with the family and friends of Corporal Alex Guy, of the 1st Battalion The Royal Anglian Regiment, at this difficult time.

"For nineteen years he served his country with distinction and we are enormously proud of him.

"We are also proud of Corporal Guy's colleagues that are serving in Helmand province at this time. It is right that The Royal Anglian Regiment were granted the Freedom of Basildon last year and we wish them a safe and progressive tour."

My thoughts go out to this mans family.. Any person that dedicates their life for this country are wonderful brave people.... How about as respect for this mans family by stopping you 2 faced Labour Councillors in Pitsea and Vange not giving council houses to Afgans in Redgrave Road and surrounding areas. Thats like chucking their best wishes in the faces of the poor family that lost a family member.

Terry2 you are a discrace using this young mans death to make moronic comments about an issue you are totally wrong about no Labour Councillors or any Councillors of any political group gives council houses to afgans . Anyone who can afford to can buy or even rent from a private landlord regardless of who or where they come from. Get the facts right before you decide to post such untrue comments.

Another pointless death.

419 killed in Afghanistan now, and what for ?
Absolutely nothing.

24hrs after the last soldier leaves, Afghanistan will revert back to the festering hole it was before they went.

What a waste of fine men and women.

To the best of my knowledge Labour have not been in power in Billericay (Basildon sub district) for some years now. And even when they were they had no power to allocate council accommodation to any particular racial grouping. That's the trouble with right whingers like Terry2, strong on bile and hatred and low on intelligence and reason.

As stated 419 men woman and kids have died in Afghanistan and the labour councillors are housing these people that bomb torture and terrorise our soldiers, my son as you must know has had 3 bouts of Afghanistan and and Im glad he now is in Germany . Are you some kind of pathetic person. Those poor family's that lost love ones and you agree with housing the scum we are at war with. You must be using the computer in Broadmoor hospital. You should be ashamed at yourself. God save the queen and all those who defend us.

Terry2 and 3 it is entirely possible that persons of afgan heritage live in Redgrave Road but they would not have been housed by Basildon Councillors. You can say it as often as you like and if you want to you can believe it but a lie is a lie. As for Cllr Callaghan shame on him too using this young mans death to get his name in the paper. He and his type self serving hypocrites are the reason I no longer vote.

No Political Points to make, no rights or wrongs for heavens sake.

He served us and gave his life for me you and anyone that believes in freedom and the prevention of cruel heartless and godless people who want to train in methods to kill us for no reason other than we allow women to be free and we allow democaracy for all and we allow people the right to live in a civilized world.
This young man gave his life trying to protect us and stop those godless morons from exporting their beliefs, thoughts and evil actions to our shores and beyond.
For that I thank this young man who did not die in vain. s did the victims of 9/11 and others.
My thoughts are with his family who will never recover from the loss of a brave and special son.

To the soldier I say Thankyou.

Hi Terrys, can understand your anger but those families may also be running from the horrors of that country. Many Afghanis welcome the West's intrusion and work with our forces. That said I think it is a futile task, a waste of young life and a cynical exercise to destabilise the region

Agreed Blair & co. took us into these wars but what is conveniently forgotten is the Tory opposition was four square behind e ventures. and have carried on where the previous administration left off. Your rabid right wingers are tunnel visioned, seein reds under the bed, on top of the wardrobe and by the loo door. When it is pointed out to them their facts are wrong they resort to calling me a sicko and a cretin. Unlike them, I suspect, I served my country in the middle east and my father paId the supreme sacrifice in World War II. Indeed no lessons in patriotism from these clowns.

TW, it is easy to lose a bit of perspective if your son is at risk. It is sometimes difficult to differentiate between a country's policies and the individual citizens. There are decent people of all nationalities even if our government chooses to invade them. I'd like to see the USA fight its own battles

Then TW do you not understand what being in a parliamentary system is? Do you think that a minority of MP's can impose a decision on a Government that has a working majority, such that Bliar enjoyed? If the opposition had voted en masse against Labours wars do you think they would have stopped it? No.
Plus has the 'sexed up dossier' '45 minutes to deploy' and the whole 'WMD debate' passed over your head? Bliar LIED to Parliament to take us into his wars. It's insane to blame anyone other than the Government of the day.

The funny thing is I agree with everything you say about Blair and the dossiers but do you believe for one minute that Hague, Duncan Smith or Howard would have done anything different? I cannot defend Blair but for anyone on the right to come over all Simon Pure is nauseating. Do you remember the shame faced Tory front bench willing to let an innocent man go to jail to save their political skins in the Arms for Iraq scandal.
