Petitioners voice their anger over Pitsea swimming pool plans
8:14am Wednesday 20th June 2012 in Basildon By Gina Marden
RESIDENTS against plans to bulldoze Pitsea swimming pool voiced their anger as they presented a 3,000 strong petition to Basildon Council.
The plans to bulldoze the pool to make way for a new Morrisons store have already been passed.
But the council was forced to hold a debate on the issue after campaigners gathered the massive petition.
At a meeting to discuss the petition residents told how they will not be able to afford to travel to other pools if the facility closes.

Of course I and the others will use the store, but why do we need to have x2 massive superstores in Pitsea?
How will this encourage and facilitate other small businesses?
What will this give to people in Pitsea in the short term other than another retail choice!
Plus in the longer terms this will (probably) kill of the other smaller independent traders and leave effectively a duopoly between Tesco's and Morrison's
What I don't understand is why Pitsea pool cannot be incorporated into the regeneration scheme. It is one of the few resources in the area that is there for the good of the community!
Yes Pitsea needs regeneration, but it should involve the community and not be pushed through by councilors who do not live even live in Basildon - let alone Pitsea!
I spoke at length last night at the committee meeting and apart from the recently elected councilors I received nothing but indifference and even in one case outright hostility.
The meeting fell into disarray and became a petty argument over the primary investor is, which we know as the developer is LCP but Morrisons (if indeed they sign) will be tenants in a store that will change forever the face of Pitsea and surely they should be involved in understanding what the impact of this is - both good and bad.
I have had 3000 people sign my petition, the majority from people who actually use the pool - Should we not at least try to find a way to save Pitsea pool?

Kevin Blake, the Council's Member for Leisure and sports seems to be backing his leader, Bulldozer Ball all the way so there's very little chance of any u-turn here.
The Council don't really care what the public think as is evidenced by their behaviour over the past years.
It's a shame that they keep getting returned to office every time there's an election.....
