CONTROVERSIAL plans to build new homes on a conservation area off Billericay High Street have been approved despite rejections from two councils.
Both Billericay Town Council and Basildon Council voted against the application to build eight houses and one flat behind Barclays Bank.
Yet the refusals were dramatically overturned after developer R and G Holmes appealed to the Govern- ment’s independent planning inspector.
Now it has been given permission to build two three-bedroom homes, six two-bedroom homes, and a one-bedroom flat. Jim Devlin, deputy council leader of Billericay Council, said: “It’s an appalling thing to do. I think the inspector has taken leave of his senses.”
