Man hit by car in Billericay

A man was hit by a car tonight.

The 21-year-old man was struck by the car in Outwood Common Road, Billericay, near the junction with Southend Road at 5.50pm.

Initial reports suggest his injuries do not appear to be life-threatening.

The road was partially blocked while emergency services dealt with the incident.

I drove past moments after this occurred. It was pitch black and in that narrow stretch and there is no pavement on either side for a few hundred yards. Surprised it doesn't happen more often as it's NOT smart to walk in that bit ESPECIALLY if your wearing black clothing. Cool but lethal.

There used to be a thing called the Countryside Code where amongst other rules (under these circumstances) you should walk on the side of the carriageway FACING oncoming traffic. So you can see vehicles and take avoiding action if necessary. Plus wear light clothing or carry a torch.

It looked to me as if this victim was on the wrong side of the road IMO.

It doesn't make much difference to him which side of the road he was, ca,t bolt the door after the horse has bolted!

You can buy 'nigh glow' strips for just a £1 now, they are brilliant for anyone walking out at night ... but no mention here if the driving paid attention or was speeding!
