Calls for survey to assess Canvey's failing road network
8:00am Wednesday 2nd January 2013 in Castle Point
A SENIOR councillor is calling for an in depth survey to be carried out to assess the condition of Canvey’s road network.
Concerned residents claim the road infrastructure on the island is at breaking point, as major roads such as Canvey Way, Somnes Avenue and Long Road as well as key junctions such as Sadlers Farm and Waterside Farm roundabout are regularly at a standstill.
Fears are the situation will only get worse as in the next five years Castle Point Council anticipates building 449 homes on the island as part of their development strategy for the borough.
More homes are also in the pipeline as prospective plans for 700 homes at Thorney Bay Caravan Park and Point Road have already been approved.
Now, Dave Blackwell, leader of the Canvey Independent Party, says conducting a detailed survey of the road network should be made the top priority in 2013 if new homes are on the horizon.
He said: “I have been absolutely inundated with emails and phone calls from people complaining about the terrible traffic on the roads. People are shouting from the rooftops Canvey’s roads can’t take any more large scale developments, so it’s about time an in depth survey was done to really assess just how our roads are doing.
“Everyone who lives here knows what they are like, and doing this would prove it once and for all. Before any more homes are built we need new roads.”
This comes after Rebecca Harris, Tory MP for Castle Point lobbied the Government in the House of Commons to change planning laws requiring infrastructure to be in place before major developments are approved.
In October, an exclusive Echo investigation revealed seven out of nine GP practices on the island were oversubscribed by in some cases up to 770 patients over the national average.
Essex County Council also confirmed the schools would not be able to cope with the additional pupils.
Mrs Harris said: “This is a huge issue in Castle Point. Often what statutory consultees such as the utility companies and the Highways Agency assure people is sustainable for the local infrastructure, does not tie up with the reality of people’s everyday existence on the ground.
“A lot of MPs share this concern that developments should only be approved where the infrastructure is in place to cope with more homes.”

I know many many roads in Benfleet that are far worse and can be easily compared with third world roads.

Yes, the main roads may have problems at times but if, for example, Tarpots is gridlocked for someone wishing to go London bound then you can go through Rayleigh to the A127 or down Essex Way and via Canvey Way.
Once Canvey is gridlocked at Waterside there are NO alternatives for the whole 50,000 Island population.

Burning999 do you seriously believe that the over 700 properties because they are being built on Canvey won't affect Benfleet at all? They will only add to the present road congestion everywhere in the Borough. Put on too what is planned, but opposed by Castle Point in Benfleet which most probably will get approved on appeal and the floodgates will be opened.
Both our MP. And Councillors of all parties should support this no build without the infrastructure.

I will also take this opportunity to comment about the Essex County Council response of the schools will not be able to cope !!! This infuriates me as Mr Castle who was responsible for education at the time of closing Furtherwick Park school on Canvey Island. He stated a drop in pupil numbers at primary level meant that Furtherwick Park would no longer be needed. In my opinion money 'allocated' for the 2 schools should have been made available to refurbish the 3 schools. He also promised No dwellings would be build on the old castle view site but there are plans for this. These promises are made by so called county Councillors who are all up for re-election this year.....Heaven helps us

When Labour were in power at CPDC, BD was deputy leader and the developers still built so whats different today?
My comment about the band wagon was due to the Echo's editorial

How is a vote for the 'INDIES' wasted when they complain and campaign and GET THINGS DONE !!
To me that's the whole idea of having a Councillor who will work for the people they represent.
I'd be interested to see how many campaigns and complaints the 'TORIES' have won on the mainland as from what I can see out of the area of Castle Point Canvey seems to be better off

Give me a list of things the INDIES have actual achieved.
In your world did they not tell you the Tories are the ruling party they get things done as and when they want, please or a fend they just get it done, you end by saying who is better of but you dont actually name the lucky tax payers.

And what did the the people of benfleet get for £20 a year less Ummmmmmmmm yeah NOTHING !!!
How many people voted for a cabinet system??? A system that pays Councillors that area already paid an even higher astronomical expense to do WHAT ! They don't listen to the public as 'IKnowBetter' has already said. If I was you I would add up the cost of having a useless cabinet system and nodding with their leader Councillors before you start on the town council

Upset are you really claiming the Indies invented the Town Council? There have been Town Councils around the Country long before Canvey had its own.
Also those 1500 out of the 40,000 residents that voted was the majority of votes, how many came out and voted Tory? what ever the figure it was less then voted for the Indie party otherwise they would be in power would they not.
Happy new year by the way,
..

As far as who voted them into office, the same goes for CP bye election so stop moaning about the Tories, if you agree with majority rules.

Now you tell me why? If Mr MaClean was so keen to see what the residents voted for, a separate Council, put in place why won't he say so? Or is it just another cheap political shot?

There's a surprise.
Because those who voted were not representative quota of those eligible to vote.

So because the Tories won the majority and are in power, your saying people should not "moan" (some would say have an opinion), on how they are running the Council? Maybe you should take your own advice where the local Council is concerened or move to a Tory held area. You sound exactly like one or Two Tory councillors I could mention, dont do as we do, do as we say!!!

You moan more then most Upset usually about Canvey Town Council because it is run by a party that is headed by someone you have serious personal issues with, rather then admit the fact they have and are continuing to acheive, against the odds, a community feel as well as voiced residents concerns in Council and highlighted on numerous occassions the incompitance's of aTory Lead Borough Council.
**
Again you moan about paying higher taxes then many other area's but still continue to live there.
I dont condone you for supporting the Tories, indeed I commend your staunch support for a Party that has no consideration for its residents other then to acheive gain for their individual political carreers.
