AN ANCIENT woodland will stay open to the public ater it was bought by the council.

The Church Commisioners, who own West Wood in Hadleigh, have accepted an offer from Castle Point Council for the 79-acre site.

The finer details of the deal are still being hammered out by the two side’s legal teams.

But both parties are hopeful of reaching an agreement in the next few weeks.

A joint statement issued late yesterday read: “Whilst the Council has submitted a bid and the Church Commissioners have indicated acceptance of it, there is no binding agreement on either party until contracts have been exchanged.

“Both the Church Commissioners and Council are moving swiftly to exchange of contracts in an endeavour to secure the future of the wood.”
