CASTLE Point MP Bob Spink has presented a petition to the House of Commons in a bid to save the struggling car scheme.
The petition was the result of efforts by the New Thundersley Townswomen’s Guild, who gathered almost 100 signatures from people opposed to Castle Point Council’s decision to cut funding.
Dr Spink, who presented the petition, said he was shocked by the council’s decision.
He said: “I am very concerned the council tried to cut funding without proper consultation with the scheme organisers and with no consultation with the public, the users of the scheme or me.”
The petition asks the council to reverse its decision and continue to fund the project’s two drivers.
It also asks the council to increase support for local, greener forms of transport.
Dr Spink added: “Our communities are enriched and strengthened by volunteers who work in excellent schemes such as the Castle Point Social Car Scheme.
“I warmly congratulate all the caring people involved in the scheme, which helps vulnerable people. “
