'Save our Canvey paddling pool'

PROTESTERS turned out in force in an effort to save Canvey's paddling pool.

The pool protest was organised to oppose Castle Point Council’s plans to fill in the tidal pool on the seafront because of health and safety concerns.

Ignoring the political point scoring, there is an Emergency Meeting of the Canvey Town Council at The Paddocks on Tuesday 9 February at 7:30pm all interested in what happens to the pool - for or against please attend and make your voices heard.

irrespective of the spinkie bandwagon, as qouted, at least someone cares about our island and what goes on, maybe it will be good idea if some of the cpbc committee turn up tuesday night, and see how the islanders feel, it will be a sad day if they remove our paddling pool, its given so many people enjoyment the past 70 years plus, why remove something that gives so many people so much enjoyment

This is being made out as if it is the only pool. There is another litterally a minutes walk from this one. CPBC have already said instead of repairing the pool, which is a complete waste of taxpayers money, they will be investing the money in the other pool. It is sad to see something with this much history go but with the regeneration of canvy, the investment into waterside and the paddocks and the work being done on the other pool it cannot be said that CPBC are not doing anything for us here in Canvey.

have you actually ever seen the other pool its like giant puddle full of rocks and debris ,when the tide is in there is no beach what is the point of this , do you actually go to our beach during the summer, iam there with my grandchildren, no children use the other pool, they cant stand on the edge and crab, as its covered with seaweed and algea. its far more dangerous than the pool we want to save.

the majority of councillors on the island are just interested in lining there own pockets! everyone knows who they are! and why canvey needs a huge fly where the fountain once stood is beyond me! what an eyesore! Save the pool and at least give the children somewhere safe to play while at the beach, if they do get rid of it and a youngster drifts out to sea they will wish they kept it!

Which is why they have said they are going to improve the other pool. Instead of getting angry at CPBC why not consult with them over the work that is going to happen on the remaining pool and make that into what you want. I agree that the beach needs somewhere safe and fun for the kids to play but this pool is completely unsafe...I mean have you seen it!!!

Am I reading too much between the lines of this story? Two main voices to keep this pool open is MP and the owner of Shell beach cafe right next to the pool, is it me or is there a conflict of interest here?
Also I am fed up with Spinkie using any opportunity to get on the front page of any paper in an attempt to con the voters into thinking he cares.
He only cares about his £100,000 pay cheque and if he has any legal bills he knows we will pay and no questions must be asked.

This is an accident waiting to happen, the sea side of the pool is about 6 foot deep with the tide in and no guard rails, thats why it wil cost too much to bring upto health and safety standards. Surely thats more important than the profits from the cafes sales.

Vocal Voice. The improvement of the other pool takes the form of making part of it a crabbing pool, therefore lessening the size. £58,000 to repair the pool they want to pull down or £50,000 to pull it down, hardly much difference. As for upkeep how long do you think it would be before Pam Challis decided they Council could not afford to maintain it.

lifelongislander says...
10:44am Tue 9 Feb 10

Upset - People will visit Canvey beach whether the pool is there or not it will not affect the business of the lady who owns the cafe. It is about another
part of Canvey being taken away without the people of Canvey having a say.

The £2.5 million being spent on leisure in the Borough is being spent on Waterside, Runnymede and The Paddocks - You cant have a free day out at any of those facilities. You would only spend a couple of hours swimming in an indoor pool - you can spend the whole day on the beach for free and get plenty of fresh air into the bargain. Make no mistake once that pool goes they will come up with a reason for the other one to go and then for the beach to go.

Have you ever been to the beach?? 6 foot deep - get real - barely 3ft at its deepest point and is completely covered when the tide is in.
I was at the meeting with many others who were neither cafe owners or Members of Parliament - this pool needs to be kept open. Children will always be on the beach in nice weather, with or without the pool. At least the pool offers a little protection from them being swept out to sea or getting stuck in the mud, slipping on rocks etc. The pool may not be ideal - but it offers a place of relative safety - to my knowledge there has been no serious incident involving the pool. Fear of litigation is destroying all aspects of our social society and this, if it is allowed to happen, is just one more victim of the nanny state that has evolved around us. I grew up at a time it was ok to fall over or climb trees compensation and litigation was unheard of. When will common sense take over and people sit up and stop the ever increasing number of things that can never be permitted for fear of who may have to pay the compensation.

Usual lot of critics. High on not supporting what many residents on Canvey want. Snipe away at those trying. Never attend a meeting to help.
Top priority for this lot. Hide behind a stupid supposed to be funny email name.
Try having the guts to put your real name to what you have to say. Might be worth taking account of then.

Couldn't they just flood the whole of Canvey and turn it into one big paddling pool. Surely a win-win situation for everyone.

If this is the pool I remember, it's where I did my first strokes along the way to learning to swim. It was deep enough for that and felt safe.

Yes I have seen it, there is nothing unsafe about it! I went in there when I was a kid and it is ideal!

This pool has apparently been in use for a good many years. A large number of local people have organised a protest at its threatened closure. The sitting MP for Castle Point has lent his support to the campaign. The upgrading / repairs and maintenance will cost little more than the cost of demolition.......

Just what is the problem here? Bob Spink knockers should note that no other prospective parliamentary candidate has shown interest or bothered to show up, Canvey kids will hopefully make full use of it and might not develop into the stereotypes we love to hate. It is a public amenity which is still free! (what a rarity).

If only the knockers had noticed the article recently which mentioned a quite extortionate sum being proposed to erect a few more bike sheds and some pretty signs at Benfleet station....... but thats another story.

I heard Canvey was going to get it's own currency with Geoff King on the back of the notes? Also Canvey will become a principality, similar to Monaco and is therefore bidding to have an F1 track implemented in time for the 2013 season. Also passports will be required to get through immigration control on and off the Island - can anyone form Canvey confirm this ?

Maybe your right, there are a lot of very wealthy people on the Island so it might work, Leigh on Sea tried it a few years back but as it was just full of people who make out they had money sitting outside pubs on the broadway all their lives and doing drugs to blend in with the rest the so called "wealthy" residents it didn't work!
