Design of supermarket unveiled in new plans

THIS is how the new Morrisons supermarket in the centre of Hadleigh could look, if plans are approved by Castle Point Council.

The artist’s impression shows the proposed store will have two large glazed entrances opening to the car park and to London Road, allowing shoppers access from the town’s main shopping area.

The new store will be built on the site of the former Lookers car showroom, in London Road, next to Morrisons’ exisiting store.

This will be knocked down to provide extra car parking spaces. Morrisons revealed its attention to expand into the Lookers site earlier this year and it held a consultation with shoppers to outline its plans.

James Smith, development executive of Morrisons, said: “The feedback from the consultation in Hadleigh has been one of the most positive we have had to date.

“The community is keen to see the new store delivered in the town as soon as possible.

“People can see a state-of-the-art, new Morrisons would help kick-start the much-needed regeneration in Hadleigh.”

The new store will be nearly 40 per cent larger than the current one and will include a cafe.

Designed by architects Bowman Riley, the building will include larger specialist counters, including a butchers, fishmonger and bakery.

It is also expected to provide extra jobs.

If Morrisons is to secure the site, it will have to beat other firms, and it is known Waitrose is interested in the location.

Castle Point Council is expected to demand the supermarket makes a financial contribution towards its planned redevelopment of Hadleigh in exchange for granting planning permission.

Jeffrey Stanley, deputy council leader, said: “It’s important developers, such as Morrisons, work closely to try to insure our vision for Hadleigh town centre can be realised.

“I hope Morrisons’ planning application will reflect this.

“At the end of the day it’s in everyone’s best interests to get a vibrant and cohesive redevelopment of Hadleigh.”

The planning application is expected to be considered by the council’s development control committee at its next meeting on Tuesday, October 5.

If permission is granted, Morrisons hopes the new store will be open for trading in 2012.

Got to admit I like Morrisons. Trouble is it has alway been too small and thus very crowded at certain times. This put me off shopping there. When it is bigger I may give it another go.

Well, I certainly think something needs to be done about the former Lookers site, it doesn't help people's image of Hadleigh, passing by that & the empty Fire Station & former Crown pub.
Waitrose already have 2 quite large stores in the area, & charge considerably higher prices than many other supermarkets. Additionally, you cannot really propose to have 2 rival stores of that kind next door to each other.
Good luck to Morrisons, I hope they succeed.

Morrisons advertise special offers in the newspapers but they are never in store when you go there.

No they don't.

In fact the Waitrose at Shoebury has many many every day items cheaper than ASDA.

It's just that they don't advertise as much as Tesco or Asda.

Hadleigh has a great opportunity to take a massive leap forward if it is done properly.

A massive part of Hadleigh's commercial area is either empty, owned or controlled by the Council and with the promised Regeneration plan Hadleigh has been thrown a life line. The problem arises when a proposal comes up before the regeneration plans have been issued. If the Morrisons plans are past then the regeneration plans will have to be made to fit around them, maybe this would work out well maybe not!
The Existing Morrisons site is very large as is the Ex Lookers site this amount of space changing at once will dominate Hadleigh and so it must be right, maybe a modern looking building is not right for Hadleigh it is opposite the Fire station maybe something in keeping with that style would be more appropriate ?
Hadleigh needs something A massive supermarket may not be only solution , my personal dislike would be the massive car park that would be visible from the road, why not put the car park to the North East of the site behind the store making the Car Park more central for Hadleigh itself and provide free Parking for the whole of Hadleigh that could be a contribution to Hadleigh from Morrisons.
Just a thought.
