Traffic chaos caused by two sets of roadworks

Congestion – traffic queuing near Benfleet Station after the start of roadworks Congestion – traffic queuing near Benfleet Station after the start of roadworks

DRIVERS were stuck in traffic chaos when workers started carrying out two different sets of roadworks close to Benfleet station yesterday morning.

Essex County Council contractors began work approaching Benfleet Bridge, off Canvey Road, Canvey, and outside Benfleet station, also in Ferry Road.

This caused lengthy tailbacks for motorists trying to get off the island, along Ferry Road yesterday morning, which was particularly upsetting for commuters hoping to park near the station and catch a train to London. These are now finished.

Dave Blackwell, leader of Canvey Independent Party, said: “I can’t understand why they would have two roadworks so close to each other at the same time.

“The temporary traffic lights at both roadworks weren’t co-ordinating with each other, so it made the situation even worse. It was absolute chaos.”

About 200 yards of Canvey Road, from Waterside Farm recycling plant to Benfleet Bridge, was reduced from two lanes to a single lane and traffic was controlled at either end by temporary traffic lights.

It is understood this was to allow unsightly metal railings to be removed along the stretch of road, as part of ongoing measures to create a better first impression for people driving on to Canvey.

About a 50-yard stretch of Ferry Road outside Benfleet Station was also reduced to one lane, to allow for road re-surfacing work, with access again controlled by temporary lights.

Mr Blackwell was stuck in a traffic jam stretching all the way from Ferry Road and past Waterside Farm roundabout to Canvey Road at 10.30am yesterday. He timed the temporary lights, situated before the roadworks approaching Benfleet Bridge.

Mr Blackwell said: “I would say it took them four minutes to change, which meant traffic was brought to a standstill throughout that time. It was an absolute nightmare for buses.”

Tracey Chapman, county councillor responsible for highways and transportation said: “Both sets of works commenced at the same time which will minimise the disruption placed on the area. Special traffic measures were also put in place on both sites.”

Of course it did not help by the so called workers on the bridge section sitting in their van for 2 hours doing nothing. Lazy!

"...ongoing measures to create a better first impression for people driving on to Canvey."

To create a better impression blow holes in the seawall and let the sea cleanse it once and for all.

Unfortunately the Ferry Road works are to install a fence which will help force the boat yard out of business. 100 years of boats being moored in the area by locals wiped out so as Canvey can be used as a car park for the Hadleigh Olympics. Seems like another excellent council decision. Would have be easier and cheaper to black out the park and ride bus windows if the council are so ashamed of its heritage. Anyone got a spare mooring?

it would be a great help for first impressions if the boat scrap yard was cleared up

That 'boat yard' is a joke.

My dad used to moor his boat there and to call it a boat yard is like calling someone who wins a race at a school sports day a professional athlete!

Most of the time you struggle to get your boat out because the channels where the boats are moored aren't properly dredged and the boats are just crammed in with no thought for access.

Not sure exactly why putting a fence up will force it out of business... I'd think they'd put a gate in so people can still get in there!

The fence will stop parking, which means people will move their boats elsewhere which will mean prices will go up to break even which means you might as well moor at the other end of the Island for the same money.
I'm sure that your Dad moored his boat there out of choice and cost was no doubt a factor. I agree that the moorings could do with a makeover but unfortunatley the restrictions placed on the yard by the council and the PLA prohibit it. Catch 22 i'm afraid. I am moving my boat and my new mooring is 50% higher per month. Still, messing about about on the water is a luxury I guess, and I, like many have benfited from a low cost mooring for a good few years. Love the similie by the way.
