New nightclub plan set to be rejected

PLANS for a new nightclub on Canvey have been unveiled – but council officials have called for them to be rejected.

Venue Entertainments wants to transform the old DIY store Fads in Furtherwick Road, into a club with a dance floor, outside seating area, and VIP lounge.

However, officers have recommended councillors reject the proposals next week due to the company not completing a sufficient flood risk assessment.

Leigh-based BGA Architects submitted the application to Castle Point Council on behalf of Venue Entertainments, to revamp the two-storey, 2,094sq-m site.

Bernard Gooding, one of the owners of BGA Architects, said: “The company wants to try to make Canvey a more vibrant place, where people will want to go out. It will also create eight or ten jobs, which is always something good in this climate.”

Ryan Macro, 21, of St Christopher’s Close, Canvey, said: “It would be good if they could put a nightclub on Canvey because there are not enough places for a good night out on the Island. Not to mention it is hard and expensive getting to Basildon and Southend all the time.”

Despite councillors claiming Canvey has the best sea defences in the country, the island is classified as a higher flood risk by the Environment Agency, meaning developers have to adhere to tougher regulations before submitting a planning application.

Councillor Bill Dick, chairman of the council’s development control committee, said: “Officers and councillors cannot recommend applications for approval if companies do not complete these risk assessments, but we will see what the applicant comes forward with.”

Residents in Furtherwick Road and Elm Road, who were consulted about the plans, also raised concerns about noise levels and the possibility of increased antisocial behaviour, as many people live as little as 20 metres away from the site.

John Pharro, 68, of Orrmo Road, Canvey, said: “People would be spilling out of there at all times of the night, it would be terrible. You have the seafront for those kinds of places. Furtherwick Road is primarily a residential area, and it should be kept that way. The poor residents there already have a bar they have to contend with where there have been a number of problems in the past.”

There were fears about side roads becoming congested with motorists, as the free car parks in nearby Oak Road and Long Road could be set to start charging drivers.

The development control committee will discuss the application at a council meeting next Tuesday. The meeting will take place from 7.30pm at the Castle Point Council offices, in Kiln Road, Thundersley.

What, so you 'young people' can keep us 'old people' awake when we have to get up early to go to work?

Go put it in a field somewhere. Off by Morrisons, they have a lot of space.

And if the council allows charging on those car parks in the town, I for one will not stop to shop[.

Why should I and why should all the residents who will have to endure the noise etc have to,
If you want to live in an area with night clubs spilling out with drunken young people spewing up and flashing next weeks washing like you see so often on the TV you move to such an area. I take that sort of behaviour you think cures boredom.
Canvey High Street is not like that when I moved here and I and I think most residents want it to stay like that. Kings and the The Goldmine provided that.
In fact the Goldmine used to be "the place" to go.

Wasn't just the Goldmine in the day though was it. I forget how many class acts I saw over Kings (not really my scene but good for impressing a bird or two), The Jelly and Haystack rocked, Platinum Blond, Bardots. 4 top flight nightclubs and more pubs per head of population than any other small town I knew. Bring back the seventies I say.

Yes 3 day week etc, but at least those enjoying themselves didn't have to act like the night clubers seem to do today.
Frankly if you really want to know how it was done you should have lived where I did in Twickenham as a teenager. Now Eel Pie Island that really was "the place", but then that was the 60s.

The quality of Nightlife on Canvey is pretty appalling but where they are proposing to put to put this club is ridiculous.

You already have Saks and the Haystack which both have late licences there and having a club near a residential area like that is just completely inappropriate.

It would make much more sense for a club to be built over somewhere between Morrisons and Waterside where it is away from residential areas and could also attract people from Benfleet.

Of course, any club on Canvey would need to make sure it actually enforces a strict door policy and keep the underage chav pond life that have driven most people away from Canvey's Pubs. I used to drink on the Island all the time but now I'd prefer to pay the extra cab fair and drink in Benfleet or Leigh where I know the chances of seeing underage yobs in caps and tracksuits fighting in the streets is much lower.

I'd hate to be a youngster living on the Island nowadaysbecause it used to have quite a good nightlife for it's size when you knew the Haystack would be packed every Thursday as people went there before King's and the Piano bar was lively of a weekend. Even the Monico used to be busy throughout the weekend when the sun was out but the whole nightlife on the Island has been destryoed because normal decent people who want a night out don't want to spend it mixing with scum so go elsewhere
