Man's hands burnt in kitchen fire

A MAN suffered burns to his hands after a fire broke out in a kitchen.

The fire engines tackled the flames at the property in North Avenue, Canvey, at 2.18pm on Saturday.

A fire service spokesman said: “Firefighters were called to a fire in a kitchen. A man aged 45 years old suffered from burns to his hands and fire crews administered first aid and oxygen therapy to him. Crews used one hose reel to extinguish the fire by 2.43pm.“

Why oh why can't basic fire safety be taught in schools. Health and safety would surely put lifetime safety as paramount, rather than the small risk from a controlled fire for education purposes. More people get injured through having no basic training and panicking. This may not even be the case here, but basic fire training (and resuscitation) should be taught in schools with a qualification when trained, which could reduce insurance etc.

I cut my finger the other day. Would you like to give me a centre page story about it?

Good job that the Echo don't print a story every time someone hurts themselves. It would take six weeks to read it.

I suspected it might be just that. Chip pans use oil at very high temperature. If they do catch fire, they are extremely dangerous. turning off the cooker and covering the pan with a lid and leaving it alone whilst it cools, is about the safest route, but they do belch smoke and people tend to try to move then outside, sadly with injuries being the common result. Using water turns them into a firebomb and nobody should try this.

I know this is being wise after the event, but others who read this may just think if their pan catches fire. I know your cousin will be seriously burned around the hands and please tell him that most people wish him sympathy and a speedy recovery. As for the court Jesters, pay them no attention, they are just trying to buy laughs whilst they are cheap!
