Hadleigh businesses may miss all the Olympic action

Worried – Louise Nicholls outside her shop Worried – Louise Nicholls outside her shop

TRADERS in Hadleigh fear they will miss out on any Olympic boost to business despite their town hosting an event.

They are concerned about how shoppers will get to the shops and the parking situation in the town, when spectators turn up to watch the Olympic mountain bike event, at Hadleigh Farm on Saturday and Sunday, August 11 and 12.

Some of the concerns stem from the fact spectators may opt to take a park and ride route to the event, picking up and dropping them off a long way from the town centre.

Louise Nicholls, owner of Atlantis Beauty, said: “It doesn’t feel like the businesses have been involved much in the build-up to the games.

“I don’t see the town benefiting much, because most spectators will be bused in and out from Canvey and Leigh.

“With the regeneration of Hadleigh, it would have been nice to get more people into the town.

“The town is going to be gridlock over the weekend and, with Saturday being my busiest day for trade, I am worried how my customers will get to and from the shop.”

Helen Goodwin, owner of Hadleigh Hats, Shoes and Bags in London Road, added: “I can’t see the Olympics having a positive impact on our trade.

“Lots of customers will stay away because the roads will be gridlocked, and because parking is going to be a nightmare.

“As a specialist retailer, I think we will be dead the weekend the events are on, because lots of our customers drive into the town to come to the shop.”

However, Jill Poet, branch chairman for the Essex Feder-ation of Small Businesses for South East Essex, said she hoped small businesses take advantage of the Games coming to town.

She said: “People will be curious. It’s human nature, they will want to have a look at the town.

“Local businesses should see this as an opportunity to maybe work differently and attract those one-off customers.”

A spkesman for Essex County Council, said: “We would encourage businesses and residents in Hadleigh to plan ahead for the games.

“The Olympic Mountain Bike events take place on August 11 and 12, and, as a result, Hadleigh and the surrounding area will be exceptionally busy.

“Essex County Council is implementing a number of measures to minimise disruption for the residents and business in the area, by introducing parking restrictions on Castle Lane, Chapel Lane and Park Chase, along with changes to residential access on Mount Zion and Seaview Terrace. Those affected will be notified directly.

“We are also taking measures to ensure the area can cope with the influx of visitors to the games.”

I expect all the council members will be at the olympic event on a freebie - so they will not care.

As for the rest of us, we will wait until it is all over and then pay for the event for the next 10 years....

Everybody has suffered in some way, just for a few weeks of Olympics. I cannot wait until it is all over.

Did Louise Nicholls honestly think that the Olympic Games being held in Hadleigh would benefit her Beauty Salon??? Watch the event and pop over the road for a manicure afterwards perhaps?

This is the Olympic Games, a once in a lifetime opportunity with a lasting legacy for Hadleigh & Castle Point and still people moan!

Cant see any benefit from the games being in Hadleigh. A statue on the roundabout at Victoria House Corner - wow!!
For sure the Council people will have their day. Just an inconvenience for locals in the main. Torch coming through - are there any Hadleigh folk involved?

This has happened in every Olympic event city and town in the world. Hadleigh is no different.
I am afraid, hosting the Olympics is all about the prestige it bestows upon the host country and the individual oraganisers and bigwigs. If that means two fingers to the local towns who host the events, and it's reidents, then so be it. Silly of Hadleigh to think any different.

Louise Nicholls recently complained about delays in the "regeneration" whilst wholly sensible checks are made on traffic flows etc and now she is complaining about the disruption that will be caused by the Olympics. What on earth does she think her complaints are going to achieve? Does she really think that Olympic visitors will want to stop off at her grotty little shop for a haircut? Methinks the lady says too much.

What an insult to this lady.
Mr MacLean I would expect better from the Chair of Castle Point Conservatives. Are you not supposed to be the party for business?

The "sensible checks on traffic" had to be done twice because the first one was flawed because of Sadler's Farm road works. Another waste of money.

There hasn't been a "first" check on traffic flows, only computer simulations which are almost certainly flawed as they don't include many of the roads either side of Hadleigh. As for this whinging woman, you won't be familiar with her shed of a shop as you don't live in Hadleigh, do you? It's 40 thousand spectators over two days or better still a constant tens of thosands visitors on the legacy over many years! Our course based mountain bike club (Hadleigh MTB Club) is looking for businesses in the area to advertise on our club website that's currently under construction, another idea is perhaps local shops offering a small discount on quiet days/evenings to club members.
The whole castle point & surrounding area will become a huge tourist attraction which all will benefit in the future.

muffindamule says...
8:25pm Thu 21 Jun 12

Why all this pessimism ? An influx of visitors to the area will mean an influx of potential new customers to businesses in the town regardless of the type of business. A little innovation, enthusiasm and thinking outside the box is what is required.

How about Atlantis Beauty doing a special face paint offer for instance ? The local hairdresser's might like to consider highlighting in the colours of all the participating nations. The possibilities are endless. The butcher, the baker, the candle-stick maker, all could benefit. You've got to be in it to win it !

cycling as a sport is huge and as a result has a huge following, it's very exciting to watch and the events are like no other, it's very easy to find yourself mingling with the pros. It's not very far at all to walk to Hadleigh from the venue, there's multiple carparks, not sure what the restrictions are on those though during the event, although the park and rides and trains will be used by most and I'm sure that Castle, Latinos, The Ancora (in the pic above) the Poona and Masa, are all more than capable, and on top of that there's all the takeaways.. I think you really are doing Hadleigh a massive injustice

The improved road leading down to the country park.
A track for cyclists to use, perhaps needing to belong to a club.

What else ?

someone posted a link further up^^ The country park will be open to everyone not just cyclists and most def not just club members, the proposed works will benefit all users. And as with any attraction you get tourists, and tourists tend to need somewhere to stay, to eat =, to shop.. there is sooo much potential and if embraced properly it will be a great thing

The Olympics are coming to Hadleigh and if you notice people are now aware of Hadleigh Essex and not just the one in Suffolk, so it has had it's advantages already.

The events are for two hours on two days, it is true most people will be bussed in and out but that will not be everyone, if people have travelled to see the race they may want to hang around Hadleigh rather than rush off ! the benefits of the Olympics for Hadleigh are long term and not necessarily noticeable instantly.
Are the Olympics good for Hadleigh, Castle Point and even Essex, in my opinion the answer is Yes.

If Louise Nicholls' business can not sustain 1 extra days holiday, then I suggest that she should take advantage of the day off to look at her business plan. Perhaps get some lessons from muffindamule, who's idea of the face painting seems a great way to capitalise on the situation (and I'll throw in the idea of National Flag nail art). Don't forget the influx of locals for the Olympic Torch Relay, all potential new customers if the right incentives and attitudes are offered. So embrace the opportunity as a way to potential new customers. I don't know you, and I am sure it doesn't depict the true you, but this article and in particular the sullen face and crossed arms in the photograph of you does nothing to suggest a "friendly welcome and service" to potential customers. If as I suspect, the pose was the photographers idea, it has done you no favours. So hope to see some welcome "Olympics Banners" on July 6th.

For most people it is. CPBC Councillors don't seem to understand that simple fact, they think that reducing the A13 to single carriageways will encourage more people to stop in Hadleigh but that's nonsense because the traffic jams it would cause will just make people want to get through the town asap. If the Councillors really want to "regenerate" Hadleigh they have to first recognise that it's just a small town astride a major A road.

Could not agree more. It is a bad businessman that only looks at effects to his business over a couple of days without taking into account the bigger picture and the long term effects.

Hadleigh has been 'tarted up', has attracted new shops and actually looks an interesting place to stop and have a look around. Maybe not on 11th/12th August but any time.

You could argue that this could have been done without hosting the cycle event, it all could have been done before, but it wasn't. It took the kick of the Olympics coming to the town to start it off, and the effects will remain long after.

And yes, I do have a local business, but not the sort that can benefit directly on the weekend of the event. This Saturday had a real buzz as I passed through the town.

I do wonder what people will find to moan about afterwards, anyone got any idea's?

I have done what you said and looked at the Dalby forest web site.
Are you seriously trying to compare a forestry commission site like that with camping facilities etc geared towards leisure with the lack of parking let alone camping that Hadleigh has?
You keep going on about the Olympic legacy, apart from the mountain biking track just what is the legacy?
At least a made up cycle track/footpath made up from Benfleet to Leigh along the foreshore would have been something for far more people to enjoy. Instead just how many people will actually use the mountain bike course and will they have permanent access.
By the way I did ask Councillor Castle to consider this footpath/cycle track at a so called consultation meeting for the Olympics as a legacy. No response of course.

It has the presence of the sally army, whom on some weekends one can hear marching and playing instruments through the town, giving a hidden remnant of a lost village . Hadleigh castle country park, provides a great walk through to leigh old, past the former remains of henry the eights home. where the army had barrocks during the war. At the same time providing work for , disabled youngsters in the cafe. Hadleigh has been able to move with the times , so take in the bow fronted norman church, in the town. on your way to the oylmpic events!
