£50k Olympic cycling statue in Hadleigh 'a waste of money'

Controversial subject – the cycling sculpture Controversial subject – the cycling sculpture

A PLANNED £50,000 sculpture to mark the Olympics in Hadleigh has been described as a “waste of money” and “not pretty”.

Residents turned out to complain about the five metre-high steel sculpture, which depicts a bike rider travelling downhill.

It has been designed to symbolise the Olympic mountain bike competition being held at Hadleigh Farm in August and will be put up on the Victoria House roundabout, which links Kiln Road, Rayleigh Road, Benfleet Road and London Road in Hadleigh.

However, it is not to everyone’s taste. Rob Perryman, 79, from Sandown Road, in Thundersley, spoke out at a Castle Point community meeting on Monday night.

He said: “What annoys me is how money is getting spent on so many things, but issues that have been in Castle Point for years are not getting fixed.

“There is a narrow footpath that runs alongside Rayleigh Road and the lamp post is badly positioned, making it dangerous.

“I have been struck by the wing mirror of a car before. I have been trying to get the council to do something about it for three years, but nothing has been done.

“How can £50,000 be spent on a sculpture when issues like this haven’t been looked at.”

Colin Henwood, 63, from Prittle Close in Benfleet, added: “My view is that it would be a waste of money and it’s not pretty. We have got the Olympic statue outside Morrisons in Hadleigh and that is nice. To me, that is something to remember the Games by, so why do we need another?

“A committee hall is needed. The whole idea of the Olympics is to leave a legacy and what better way than helping the community? Some money should be spent on helping existing areas.”

The sculpture has been paid for by the Government’s Olympic Executive as part of a art project connected to all boroughs hosting Olympic events.

It will be moved to the site after the Games.

Pam Challis, leader of Castle Point Council, said the Games coming to the area had already led to added investment. She said: “There are regenerations planned for sites in Castle Point, such as Hadleigh Hall and the town centre, so the people of Castle Point will soon be treated to these regnerations as well as the Olympic monument. It’s an exciting time for Castle Point.”

Councillors are set to make a final decision on the sculpture at a planning meeting at the council offices in Kiln Road, Thundersley, next Tuesday.

50k for this sshitt, it aint worth 2 bob.. 50k could be given to the hospice, or buy another baby incubator etc etc, im sure you have thoughts and suggestions. The sculpture looks like its been done by a 9 year old. Councillors know how to waste money don't they ? People are sick to death listening and reading about the Olympics.

I think that it's pretty good, but I question the £50k pricetag and can't help but agree that they money could be better spent.

That said, I think that applies to the Limpics in general.

I think you have ot get things in perspective it looks according to the article that the residents of Castle Point have not paid fo rthe statue as it is being paid for by a specific pot of Olympic money. SO althought the statue may be C**p the money is never going to be used to replace a lamp post. This is not right and the Olympic legacy should be decided by the residents. However hopefully if Catle Point council get it right but I am not holding my breath perhaps as has been suggested we can really capitalise on the Cycle track and keep people visiting and using it, but to do this we really need to make sure that it is not neglected and that we can promote its use to the mountain bike community for competitions and perhaps we could then becoem a regular fixture on their schedule.

Surely the proposed regenerationof Hadleigh has nothing to do with Olympics. The money for the bike statue is still paid for by us whichever fund it comes out of. A new community hall at Endway would be a lasting and useful memorial. Could be used by all ages and much needed.

The council has not paid for it. As the article states it is a goverment pot of money that has. So although I agree that it is not really the best way to spend the funds due to the way this country is run the money has to be used as stated or it dissappears into the goverments coffers and god knows what happens to it then.

If we quibbled over every single penny that ever got spent, we'd have nothing at all. There's always a worthier cause..

However, it's important to commemorate the fact that the town has been chosen to host an Olympic event. It is an honour and will bring people and viewers from all over the world to Hadleigh.

The event will bring in far more than £50k in revenue to the area, and I think it's a fair amount to spend on a permanent sculpture (which I actually think is quite attractive).

As has been said numerous times by other posters, this sculpture has been paid for by the Government's Olympic Executive not by the County Council.

Just like the millenium clock in Southend...NO THANK YOU.
Why do we have to litter our town with "artwork" by children. Most of it is rubbish (although looking at this "sculpture" most council commissions are rubbish, full stop). Most children's "artwork" should be kept in the family, stuck to the fridge door (where mum and dad can drool over it all they like) just don't impose it on me.

They could've competed to design it and had someone else build it. I am impressed by how many qualified art critics we have here.

You know, art is not something that can be measured but at least this piece has fulfilled one of its purposes, it is controversial.

Btw, I quite like it. A bit like a stop motion impression of a cyclist, befitting. Also what's the problem with getting something for free?

On a different note, why didn't you put your proposal forward. Such works are usually tendered.

I tend to resist adding comments to Echo articles - not least because they seem to get Mr Pharro excited! but I thought it worth correcting the article and pointing out that the picture is not the sculpture in question.

This is a picture of a sculpture commissioned and paid for by Morrisons as part of their development.

The sculpture discussed in the article is a 3d rendition of the Mountain Bike Pictogram designed by London 2012 (there is one for each sport and they are used on badges and posters) It has been paid for as part of the government "dressing" of Hadleigh as an Olympic venue.

Many other local authorities have chosen to dress their communities but have paid for it themselves.

The statue in question is designed to be temporarily located on the Victoria House corner roundabout and eventually relocated to the Mountain Bike venue after the games.

Much of the rest of Hadleighs dressing has been designed by Hadleigh children and Essex artists.

Isn't there already something similar to this outside Morrisons ?

This is a three day event, so I imagine most of the competitors will only be in Hadleigh for a day or two. Depending on the number of heats and finals.

I would also guess that there will be on-site catering for competitors. The majority of the viewing public, being local.

I wouldn't mind betting that while this event is on, you could drive through Hadleigh without knowing there was an Olympic event taking place. Apart from an influx of Police and traffic wardens.

But what are we actually doing in Castle Point when the Games/olympic flame journey are on.
Saw excellent coverage re olympic flame on Anglia TV yesterday showing communities celebrating in all sorts of ways. I haven't heard of anything in the whole of Castle Point yet
If anybody knows of any events going on then please ask Echo to publicise them or put them on this website
I personally would like to get involved with celebrating the Olympics locally but haven't been able to find anything to celebrate!

There are some very stupid people on here. They must have read the article with a very closed mind and jumped to so many conclusions they appear laughable.

The ECHO know how to wind the more gullible up and they come frothing on here like a pack of rabid hyenas.
.
The statue was paid for by the Olympic Committee - NOT the council.
.
The article mentions just two people an Old man of 79 who clearly is resistant to change and some twerp who doesn't know what he is talking about. How many community halls in Hadleigh? Seven - go and count them.
.
The ECHO gives the opinions of two elderly men and says "Residents turn out to complain" - Rubbish, rubbish and lies.

Seven community halls in HADLEIGH ? Where? can you let us know!
