Mystery flood ruins crops at Canvey allotments

Problems – the allotments off Canvey Road, Canvey Problems – the allotments off Canvey Road, Canvey

ALLOTMENT crops have been destroyed by a mystery flood on Canvey.

As many as 15 plots on the site, off Canvey Road, have been “seriously affected” by the deluge of water, but the flood is not being put down to rain.

Keen gardener John Rose, from Canvey, has had his plot for more than five years, but has said he would be “better off keeping ducks” after the flood destroyed every crop he had been growing.

He estimates he has lost about £200, which was spent on things such as compost and seeds, and wasted eight months’ work.

He said: “There was about four inches of water laying on the surface and it seemed to be getting worse.

“I don’t know if there’s a burst pipe somewhere, but no one is taking a great deal of interest now the allotment’s been taken over by the council.

“I don’t know whether to laugh or cry. You think about all the work and money, and you look forward to it, as growing your own always tastes better, but now it’s ruined.”

Investigations are now beginning at the nearby Castle Point Golf Centre, in Somnes Avenue, Canvey, which has also become flooded.

Debbie Brown, administration manager for the course, said the water problem was brought to her attention on Tuesday.

The course has since switched off its water pump and called in an Essex and Suffolk Water engineer to try to establish the cause of the leak.

Canvey Town Council, which owns the course land, said people affected by the flood should contact golf centre management.

A town council spokeswoman said: “Castle Point Golf Course is looking into its sprinkler system at the moment as the course is flooded as well.

“We recommend that if any individual plot owner has suffered because of this, then to write to Glendale, which is responsible for the golf course, about compensation.”

Typical TC and INDIES response to problems don't call us we don't care.
Before all you Labour, ExLabour and INDIE supporter start on me for the above comment, just think what you would have written if it had been the Tory's who were involved.
The TC own the land and are Landlords to Glendale the majority party are responsible.

Did the sirens work? This could be crucial here. A good walk spoilt by a Bog? that's not what golf was meant to be is it?

The council's advice to allotment holders sounds reasonable enough. Let's hope this affair is not simply swept under the carpet by Glendale if it is found that they are to blame.
If I had suffered from this then I would be putting in a claim for compensation just as soon as I had worked out the amount of damage done. My experience has shown that it does not pay to underestimate the damage either. Put in a claim that will generously cover the damage caused and then you won't have the hassle of haggling about it when they offer you considerably less (as they almost certainly will).

If it is the fault of the golf club then I hope they have the balls to own up to it.

Perhaps the alleged water-borne pollutants from the Dale Farm site that were predicted by some of the remaining residents to be flowing downhill towards the Tesco store on the A127 have accelerated and sprung up in Canvey.

"that were predicted by some of the remaining residents" Not predicted by the resident but by experts bought in to look at the issue. The council were made aware of two different reports made by INDEPENDENT companies and of course ignored it...the resident and their supporters while trying to get their voices heard on the reports were shouted down ie "you lost end of" usually be people who dont live in the area and so have noting to fear from contamination. People in properties in Oak lane have now started complaining as the situation they are now facing sink in, both figuratively and literally..Even 'septic tank' Len is now up in arms...Sometimes you get more than you wish for.

To be honest, the predicted tidal rises seem to make all of this a bit irrelevant.
I am more concerned about the council's removal of the Canvey sirens and the fact they aim to replace them with texting.
I remember the Canvey floods and, if it happens again, and if anyone loses their life because of the councillor's action, there will have to be charges of corporate manslaughter brought. This right-wing lot might think they will easily push us back into serfdom, but I don't thing they know anything about the bulldog spirit they will one day face!

I do believe you have lost the plot (and I don't mean the plot in Oak Lane!).

This is the weird poster who pretends to be anyone but himself. He often mimics me but never in a derogatory or racial way which might make him accountable. My user name has a full stop after it, no life's doesn't...why does why do it? who knows people like this are...well...strange
