Southend Airport deal with private jet company at Olympics

Southend Airport deal with private jet company at Olympics Southend Airport deal with private jet company at Olympics

THE rich and famous will jet into Southend for the Olympics after bosses secured an exclusive deal with one of the world’s biggest private jet companies.

Landmark Aviation, which has bases at more than 50 airports across the globe, has named Southend Airport as its only destination for 2012 Games passengers.

To ensure its new well-heeled customers enjoy a smooth journey to Stratford, the airport has redesigned its old terminal to cope with as many as five luxury business jets at once. It is believed to have been enticed to Southend becaue of its proximity to the Olympic park, which can be reached in about 45 minutes on the train – quicker than from any other UK airport.

Dan Bucaro, Landmark’s chief executive, said: “We’ve seen the airport facilities first-hand and believe they represent something new and very special for the London area.

“We look forward to introducing our clients to Southend Airport and to ensuring they receive the best possible welcome and service when they fly to the UK this summer – whether for the Olympics or any other reason.”

Industry experts have predicted there will be an extra 3,000 private jet flights to airports within commuting distance of Stratford throughout the Olympics.

The deal secures business jet spaces for Landmark for the rest of the summer.

However, as the company specialises in providing last-minute luxury flights for rich passengers, airport bosses are unlikely to know which aircraft they will be welcoming until just a few hours before they arrive.

Alastair Welch, the airport’s managing director, said: “We are very excited to be entering into this partnership with Landmark.”

I think what they meant to say was that it was cheapest available.
London City would, indeed, have been the most efficient, transport wise, but it may already be over-subscribed during the Olympic period and the facilities and services are probably twice the price.

LCY is the airport code for London City, the same way SEN is for London Southend and not LSA. It's a shame as it was a well informed intelligent post, but let himself down by quoting something that doesn't exist.

How has he let himself down by using an acronym (which in my dictionary says is a word formed by the initial letters of other words) that LSA certainly is, rather than using the airport code? I understood what he meant and I am sure more people, like me, wouldn't know the airport official codes so would use the acronym. I mean I have seen SEN in the comments to stories about Southend Airport before but I thought they were something to do with that protest group.

It is the International Civil Aviation Organization airport code for Southend how many people would know that on here (no offence to anyone)

So many people use LCA for London City SEN or SND when on chat boards that eveyone knows what you are talking about and as it is not in an offical form it matters not.

The 4 letter ICAO codes are mainly used as a geographic code for airport identification. The 3 letter IATA (International Air Transport Association) are used for transport operations and most people who have flown will notice this as the destination airport on the luggage tags attached to their bags by check-in staff, e,g, LHR=Heathrow, LGW=Gatwick, SEN=Southend, LAX=Los Angeles etc.

Major Incident says...

Regardless of the proximity and capacity of London City Airport, the projected demand for the DLR (not an international code by the way so please don't argue!) during the Olympic period is such that journey times will considerably increase despite plans to lengthen the trains. The truth is demand is expected to exceed capacity. Therefore the estimated 45 minutes by 1st class cattle truck from Southend Airport station probably will be the fastest achievable time from any airport to Stratford. So well done Stobarts and up yours SAEN.

looks like the formula for assigning airport codes should leave london southend with the letters LSE. the London School of Economics is famously known around the world by this acronym though...i wonder if they took that into account when deciding on SEN? anyway, as an expat southender who comes home once a year i'm stoked that i can fly from there to euroland and ireland now, love it.
I think SEN code was about before the London tag was attached to our airports name .

They could always use the excellent Andrews airport 7 seater luxury mercedes. Cheaper than the train, Taxi, and door to door, well done to all at Southend airport, onwards and upwards.

LCA is not an official airport code.

I'd imagine the name of the airport determines the city it serves rather than its geographical location.
If we really are being pedantic:

LCA actually is an airport code, it is for Larnaca in Cyprus.
