Driver flees after knocking down cyclist, 13, in supermarket car park in Hadleigh

A DRIVER knocked down a teenage cyclist in a supermarket car park, but failed to stay at the scene after checking he was all right.

Police are appealing for witnesses to identify the female driver who hit the schoolboy, aged 13, at the Morrisons car park exit in New Road, Hadleigh.

An Essex Police spokesman said the teenager, who lives locally and was wearing a black King John School uniform at the time, was treated in hospital for cuts and bruises to his leg.

So she didnt 'flee'.

She got out and asked the boy if he was ok, he presumably said he was, so she left.

Details of the collision, which happened on Tuesday, July 20, just after 3.30pm, have only just been released by Essex Police.

Happened on July 20th - Maybe the Echo has employed somebody who can see into the future

It sounds as though the woman driver checked the child was okay and then carried on so she didn't exactly flee the scene

Morrisons must have CCTV in the store and if she paid by card, possibly just a few minutes before the incident, then it should just be a bit of deskwork to trace her. You'd hope she can work that out for herself anyway, and contact the police before they contact her.

If you knock a child off a cycle, it must be in your own interest to inform the police?

I would hope people would stop, but we only know part of the story. If she checked and he said "I'm fine" and wandered off, what was she to do? I think there are more details behind this. Actually, if someone is injured in an RTA isn't there a requirement to call the police?

If there is a collision where someone is injured or property is damaged and details are not exchanged, then it MUST be reported to the police.

This driver has failed in that they left the scene and - as yet - have not reported it to the police.

I know I mentioned it on another thread but a cyclist collided into me some time ago and quickly did a runner as it was his fault. I did call the police but they were not interested, calling it a domestic incident even though it happened on a busy roundabout and did cause damage to property. For all I know, this particular cyclist could have gone home with a bash to his leg for instance and developed a blood clot which could potentially kill him. I did as much as I could, but the police did not take it any further.

Well then your conscience should be clear – if anything you should be pist at the cyclist for damaging your car (as it was their fault). I’d say that if you make absolutely certain they are all right – no scrapes, no cuts, no pain, no anything then why the hell would you stay at the scene? This kid did end up in hospital with cuts and bruises though so in this case she certainly should have stayed!
