Bull terrier shook my dog like ragdoll

A DANGEROUS dog left roaming around a popular beauty spot launched a savage attack on a much-loved pet.

Melanie Corstorphine was horrified when the stray dog sunk its teeth into Teddy, her 11-year-old Bichon Frise, as she walked him along the cliffs at Leigh.

Two men, who spotted the attack in Grand Parade, jumped out of their cars and repeatedly kicked the animal until it eventually let go.

Mrs Corstorphine, 52, of Grand Parade, said: “The dog came up and started having a little sniff, as dogs do, and then it suddenly launched on to Teddy’s neck, like when dogs get a toy and shake it. He was like a ragdoll.

“I thought he was going to die, especially when these guys couldn’t get him off at first. I was so grateful to them because they could have been hurt themselves.”

Teddy suffered two puncture wounds to his neck, and was taken to the vet where he received antibiotics and anti-inflammatories.

But Mrs Corstorphine, who works as a district nurse in the Rochford area, said it had left both of them badly shaken.

She said: “He hasn’t been the same since – he has been lying in corners and wants to be quiet.

“I don’t know if he will want to go out again, and I don’t know if I’ll want to either. I was sick about three times that night because of the shock.”

She wants to warn people about the dog, which was off the lead and appeared to have no owner.

She describes it as like a Staffordshire bull terrier, but with a longer nose. The dog was white and had brown or grey patches.

It was with another small dog, but this did not take part in the attack.

Mrs Corstorphine also wanted to thank the men who helped.

She added: “I phoned the police, who said it’s a good job I reported it because it could be a child next time. If it got hold of a kid it would be awful.”

An Essex Police spokeswoman confirmed the attack, which happened at about 10am on Bank Holiday Tuesday.

She said: “The informant was advised this would be a civil matter only. However, police officers visited them and took details to try to assist in establishing who the owner of the other dog was.”

Anyone with information should call Leigh police on 101.

wait for all the comments bad mouthing bull terriers, its not dog breeds that are the problem its the owners who don't look after them correctly or train them to fight, personally i don't think any dog should be in any public place without a lead, just like any person any dog can turn!

I've seen this dog being pulled off another dog outside the Falcon pub in Southend. This was about 6-8 weeks ago as I was driving past. The owner (p*sshead) had the dog on a long lead and yanked it off as it grabbed the other dog round it's kneck.

This article has left me a little confused. First Mrs. Corstophine is quoted as saying
“I phoned the police, who said it’s a good job I reported it because it could be a child next time. If it got hold of a kid it would be awful.”

Then a police spokeswoman is quoted as saying “The informant was advised this would be a civil matter only".

Relying on possible civil action being taken is hardly conducive to preventing an attack on a child in the future is it ?

well said cagedtiger. irresponsible owners are the problem, not the dogs.

Are you sure it was the same dog ? Teddy doesn't look all that ferocious to me and Bill Corstorphine hardly looks like a local at The Falcon !

We have been brought up with the bull breeds as grandad was a register breeder from 1946 until he died in 2010. We had a staffordshire bull terrier from 1951 until 1965 and again from 1972 until 1987 when the breed was very very expensive a very few real breeders. We then bred Bull Mastiffs until 2007 and now the British bulldog. Now staffs are interbred and so are many of the owners to let them attack other dogs, they hang them on tree branches to wind them up. Its not the dog breed its the mongrels that wind them up and get them to do this. A good staff will get on with any dog and any kid. Its the imbosil owners. You can buy a staff for as little as 50 poxxxy quid anywhere.. Instead of putting the staffs down, put the owners down.
